Zippy Shepherd's Pie

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2012
Followed the recipe very closely, just subbing in some corn instead of peas and baking it in a 350 degree oven for 39 min before adding the cheese and broiling so it was piping hot and delicious. I would not agree that it's a "zippy" shepherd's pie though. I'm pretty adept in the kitchen and this definitely took longer than 20 minutes prep, but I'm giving it 5 stars for its delicious and interesting flavor. The curry definitely adds a nice little curve ball to the flavorful.

Salmon with Brown Sugar Glaze

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2011
Absolutely delicious! I used 1/2 of a freshly caught Coho and it was a big fish so it took more like 20 minutes to broil. Also followed the advice of other readers and added a splash of lemon juice and soya sauce as well as a wee bit minced garlic. Definitely will make again!

Sesame Pasta Chicken Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 28, 2011
This was okay - not stellar, IMO. I followed the recipe to the letter other than adding a few more vegies. Good way to use up leftover chicken though!

Basic Quiche by Shelly

Reviewed: Dec. 28, 2010
I think this is one of those tried and true recipes and my review is not a commentary on Shelly's original recipe...but a warning to others. I only make quiche around once a year and I do hate a soggy crust so I thought pre-baking the shell was probably a good idea. So, I put my ready-made pie crust in a 325 degree oven as recommended. When I went to check on my crust 10 minutes later, it wasn't golden. In fact the sides had collapsed and curled up so I no longer had any sides! Then I checked the pie crust box directions and it directed a 450 degree oven for an unbaked shell (and yes I did prick the bottom and sides). So, if you try the pre-baking, be sure to use a hot enough oven. You can decrease the temp later for actually baking the quiche.I didn't have time to put a pie crust together from scratch so I just used the defective shell I had created and it is baking in the oven right now. I'm guessing I'll end up with a soggy crust after all as there were no sides to contain the egg batter, but hopefully it will taste good anyhow :) I would definitely try the recipe again just with a hotter oven for the prebake.

Chow Mein Noodle Casserole

Just nothing to get excited about. Kind of a bland dish. If I were going to make it again, I would add more seasoning.

Herb Rubbed Sirloin Tip Roast

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2008
Turned out deliciously! I used a 6 lb roast, so I doubled the recipe for the rub adding a tsp of dried rosemary, and substituted granulated garlic for the powder. We applied the rub the night before and sealed the roast in a ziploc. The flavouring was wonderful and was an absolute hit. Thanks, Joel

Hot Artichoke and Spinach Dip II

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2006
Wow, I hate to buck the trend of 5 star ratings, but I followed this recipe to the letter, and the dip turned out dry and crumbly, instead of rich and creamy as I would have expected. Not sure why, but I'll look for another recipe next time.

Tasty, but not totally exciting. Although I liked it, I probably would not make this one again.

Tenia's Chilled Pasta Salad

This was tasty, but not spectacular. I added some crumbled bacon to it for some extra flavor and my family liked it a lot with that addition.

Asparagus and Mushroom Puff Pastry Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2005
This recipe is truly delicious and a hit at the potluck I brought it to! It was fairly expensive to make though as asparagus is about $5/bunch where I live right now. I have a few suggestions to add to the recipe. 1. Oil baking pan well before putting puff pastry in. 2. Cut venting holes or slits in the top layer of puff pastry 3. Ten minutes was too long to cook the asparagus. I sliced my mushrooms to around 1/4" thick. Next time I make this I will fry the asparagus and mushrooms in butter together no more than 5 - 7 minutes. They have further cooking time in the oven and soggy asparagus is kind of gross. 4. Go ahead and use all of the prepared Hollandaise sauce (just shy of 2 cups). 5. Brush the top layer of puff pastry with a beaten egg before baking to give a nice glazed appearance to the finished product.

Best Italian Sausage Soup

Didn't change a thing with the ingredients, only thing I did differently was cook it all stove-top and let it simmer for an hour. Was absolutely delicious. Hearty and satisfying.

Jamie's Cranberry Spinach Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2005
Very tasty and fresh. Have made it twice now. I really did not like the almonds toasted in butter with the salad. Prefer to add divided cashews and crumbled bacon. Lovely with strawberries in it!
