About this Cook
I'm 26 and learned to cook after I graduated from college (although I did a little light cooking throughout college). I love to cook and invent new recipes; it is a very natural activity for me.
My favorite things to cook
I really like to use fresh fruits and vegetables, and I recently started eating meat again. I'm a spice-collector (same goes for tea varieties). I also have a fondness for baking muffins and cakes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Granny Val's potato salad is to die for, but it's a family secret! So are my mom's wild rice pancakes.
My cooking triumphs
Definitely the time I had friends over for a dinner party. I made bruschetta, spinach-artichoke dip, and curried yogurt dip as appetizers. The salad was mixed greens with dried cranberries, walnuts, brie, and vinaigrette (which will soon be online at under the name Life is Bittersweet Salad). For the main entree we had spaghetti and red wine. And desert was individual-sized blueberry-coconut pound cakes with lemon-honey ice cream (equal parts by weight: Greek yogurt w/ honey, homemade lemon curd, creme fraiche). (Unfortunately, most of those recipes are not my own, so they're not on!) ......In all fairness, my best friend helped me out with the cooking that day.
My cooking tragedies
I'm really horrible at getting pancakes and french toast to cook right on the griddle. They're always either burned on the outside or undercooked on the inside.

Amazing Lentils and Kale
This is a great vegan recipe. Many of my friends are vegan and now I have a new recipe for dinner parties in my file. I thought the cayenne really contributed to depth of flavor. The salsa and the broth already had enough salt, so I skipped it in favor of a generous dose of black pepper. After reading others' reviews, I will add some ground beef, sweet potato, and sour cream next time I make it for myself, to turn it into more of a chili.

Marinara Sauce
The wine makes this recipe. I took the advice of other reviewers and left out the water. Since I was using fresh chopped tomatoes (6 large-ish tomatoes made about 4 cups of sauce!), I found there was more than enough liquid, even without the water. Therefore I simmered the sauce for 45 minutes to reduce it to the desired consistency. Other modifications: sauteing the garlic with onions and mushrooms, and adding dried parsley.

Alyson's Broccoli Salad
This is one of the best picnic foods. It's excellent with grilled chicken and lemonade. I do think it's a little sweet so I usually cut the sugar in half. I'm going to have to try it with fresh grapes some time!
