About this Cook
I'm 26 and learned to cook after I graduated from college (although I did a little light cooking throughout college). I love to cook and invent new recipes; it is a very natural activity for me.
My favorite things to cook
I really like to use fresh fruits and vegetables, and I recently started eating meat again. I'm a spice-collector (same goes for tea varieties). I also have a fondness for baking muffins and cakes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Granny Val's potato salad is to die for, but it's a family secret! So are my mom's wild rice pancakes.
My cooking triumphs
Definitely the time I had friends over for a dinner party. I made bruschetta, spinach-artichoke dip, and curried yogurt dip as appetizers. The salad was mixed greens with dried cranberries, walnuts, brie, and vinaigrette (which will soon be online at under the name Life is Bittersweet Salad). For the main entree we had spaghetti and red wine. And desert was individual-sized blueberry-coconut pound cakes with lemon-honey ice cream (equal parts by weight: Greek yogurt w/ honey, homemade lemon curd, creme fraiche). (Unfortunately, most of those recipes are not my own, so they're not on!) ......In all fairness, my best friend helped me out with the cooking that day.
My cooking tragedies
I'm really horrible at getting pancakes and french toast to cook right on the griddle. They're always either burned on the outside or undercooked on the inside.

Cajun Red Snapper
Yum! I only wish it were spicier. This tasted delicious with bok choy.

Curried Hash Browns
Hi, this is the creator of this recipe. Just letting you all know that 1/2 tsp of curry powder is *not enough.* When I submitted the recipe, I wrote "to taste." 1/2 tsp is not even in the ballpark.... it should be around a tablespoon (more or less - hence, "to taste") but certainly not 1/2 tsp if you want any effect at all from the curry. Allrecipes takes a long time to respond to recipe change requests, so I thought I would make a note here until the recipe is changed.

Hearty Lentil Soup
This soup was very good. I enjoyed its complex nature. The cilantro added a lovely pungency which cleared my sinuses (added bonus). ;) I used Columbia Winery Merlot for the wine. I also added crimini mushrooms towards the end and a cumin/curry powder combo as one reviewer suggested. Good stuff!
