Pumpkin Turkey Chili

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2007
I'm giving this a 5 because with the other reviewers' suggestions it turned out to be the best chili I've ever made. I added a can of black beans, an extra can of diced tomatoes, a bunch of hot sauce, about 2 Tbsp. of Worcestershire, and extra chili powder. The pumpkin makes it into a really thick sauce without it being "stew-y". Great recipe! I also made this with Grandma's Buttermilk Cornbread from the site, and it turned into a fabulous meal.

Supreme Scalloped Potatoes

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2007
I followed a previous reviewer's suggestions and didn't boil the potatoes. I thinly sliced them horizontally and mixed them with the other ingredients. I also lightened the recipe by using fat-free chicken soup, sour cream, and milk, and I didn't add the butter. I did use regular cheddar, though. I baked them for an hour and 10 minutes, adding more cheese to the top in the last few minutes. They came out great.

Spicy Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2007
These are great if you follow the recommendations of other reviewers. I used three sweet potatoes (there's only two of us, and we even had leftovers), cut them like fries, and tossed them with chili powder, garlic powder, fresh pepper, kosher salt, and 2 Tbsp. olive oil. I baked them for 40 minutes at 400 degrees (flipped them halfway), and they turned out so well and so healthy!

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2007
This was my first time making cornbread from scratch, and is it ever addicting! I made the recipe exactly as it's written (except I substituted 1 c. skim milk + 1 Tbsp. cider vinegar for the buttermilk), and even with an oven that doesn't work well, it came out perfectly. I'll make this every time I make chili from now on, although next time I'll try it out with less butter (just to be healthier, not because it's greasy).

Manhattan Clam Chowder

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2007
I loved this recipe, but I modified it slightly because I thought it was too bland at first (I tasted it after it came to a boil). I cooked 4 slices of bacon (as per another reviewer suggestion), and then I sauteed the onion, green pepper, and a bit of garlic in the grease. I did everything else according to the recipe, only I added a bit of Worcestershire (maybe 2 tsp.), about 1/4 cup sherry, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder (all to taste). My husband and I couldn't get enough. I still gave the recipe a 5 because it really is so simple, and the base is still good but easily modified to taste.

Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2007
This pie was not only beautiful, but it tasted so good! I think next time I will mix the chocolate into the butter mixture rather than lay the chips on the bottom of the pan, as other reviewers suggested. Once the pie cooled, the inside didn't look appetizing. But, everything else was perfect--and I thought the amount of bourbon was great (any less and there wouldn't be as much taste).

Easy Morning Glory Muffins

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2007
I'm really impressed at how delicious these muffins turn out with all the healthy modifications other reviewers have suggested. I substituted whole wheat flour for the all-purpose and applesauce for the oil (so no oil whatsoever in the muffins). They were so moist! I think next time I will add more nuts and try substituting brown sugar for the white.

Hot and Sour Cabbage Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2007
I just made this recipe and loved it. It's so tasty for how simple it is. I left the corn out (forgot to buy it) but it was still great. I also added thin egg noodles like another reviewer suggested, and turned it into a meal. I will make this over and over.

White Wine Chicken Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2008
This is the best chicken soup I have ever had. I admit that I played with the ingredients quite a bit, changing up the vegetables to what I had, but the base of this soup is so excellent that it seems you can do what you like. I made it with sweet potatoes, zucchini, potatoes, mushrooms, spinach, and added some thin egg noodles. It was delicious. I added an extra 2 cups of water and cooked the egg noodles separately (other reviewers mentioned it wasn't soupy enough). Great recipe!

Cajun Roast Beef

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2008
This was fantastic. Like a previous reviewer, I used cider vinegar because I didn't have malt. I put in extra horseradish because we like spice, but it actually wasn't too spicy. Great taste, though. I cooked it for 8 hours on low, then sliced it and put it back in the original drippings. We used it in steak Po'Boy sandwiches (french bread, mayo, lettuce, tomato). Really, really great recipe.

Zesty Slow Cooker Chicken Barbecue

Reviewed: Feb. 20, 2008
I have made this recipe often, and it's always so good and so easy. The best part is that you can use frozen chicken breasts (i.e., no prepping before the slow-cooker). I like to make this with spicy sweet potato fries from this site.

Banana Sour Cream Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2008
Like many other reviewers, I was convinced my mom's banana bread recipe was the best. But, I had to try this one because of the sour cream--and, this one wins hands down. The cinnamon-sugar crust is such a great idea, and the texture is perfect. For those wondering how to make this with normal loaf pans (mine are 8 x 4), the full recipe fits in 2 of these, but I put some cookie sheets underneath because I was afraid the dough would spill over. It got close, but never ran over. The loaves were very pretty.

Strawberry Lemon Muffins

Reviewed: May 17, 2008
These were really wonderful muffins with a delicious strawberry and lemon flavor. I did use strawberries in season, and I made sure I got quite a bit of lemon juice out of the lemon. I made them as is, but since I had some leftover strudel topping in the freezer (from the Best Ever Blueberry Muffins, this site), I added a bit on top. They were great. The tart of the lemon was balanced by the topping, so next time I might just add a little bit of sugar rather than strudel.

The Best Clam Sauce

Reviewed: May 17, 2008
Although I'm sure this recipe is great as-is, it's so unhealthy I couldn't bring myself to make it in that way. I'm still giving it 5 stars, though, because the results after lightening it up were incredible! I used 2 Tbsp. butter and 1 Tbsp. oil, and then I just filled out the rest of the sauce with clam juice (either from the clams or you can buy a little bottle). This makes enough of a sauce for quite a few people, and although it still isn't good for you, it won't be awful for you either. Very nice recipe, I will make it again.

Indian Chicken Curry II

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2008
This recipe has everything I want: it's simple, easy to adjust, and absolutely delicious. Both my husband and I thought it could have easily come from our favorite restaurant. I followed another reviewer's suggestions and toasted the spices before adding the olive oil and onion, and that really added to the flavor. I think next time I'll add veggies (potatoes and peas), or maybe just do vegetarian.***Update. This is officially my favorite curry recipe because I can substitute anything in. Spinach and garbanzo beans are great.

Cranberry Nut Bread I

Reviewed: Dec. 20, 2008
I just made this recipe for the first time to give out as Christmas gifts. I followed the recipe exactly (added a few more nuts), and it turned out so beautifully. It looks pretty, and the texture is perfect. I'm also giving out Giada's Mascarpone Honey spread to go with it, for a little sweetness.

Honey Lime Chicken Wings

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2007
Wow, these were absolutely perfect for a summer garden party. I decided to grill the wings (takes about 30-40 minutes on medium heat on a gas grill) and basted them with plain honey while they were grilling. I then tossed them with the sauce before serving, and people couldn't get enough of these. I actually think they may be some of the best wings I've ever made.

Triple Berry Crisp

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2007
I used 3 12 oz. bags of frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries) but followed the rest of the recipe exactly. Everyone loved this and really raved about it, but next time I think I will make less crust and also use less butter (I think you can definitely cut 1/2 c. without any problems, maybe more).

Chipotle Honey Roasted Peanuts

Reviewed: May 23, 2009
I absolutely loved this recipe--it was surprisingly easy (I thought it would be more complicated with all the pans), and they had the perfect taste combination. Sweet and salty, smokey with a little kick at the end. I really recommend the chipotle seasoning--definitely an important part of the recipe.

Wonderful recipe as is. Made them extra large for guests and they turned out beautifully--like a coffee shop muffin.
