Cappuccino Flats

Very nice change of cookie. I forgot (!) the brown sugar so mixed it in with the dough, and they still turned out well. Seems like there are 2 identical recipes on this site, both called Cappuccino Flats.

After making this 5-10 times, this is now my go-to Sloppy Joe recipe. Everyone seems to love it and it's so easy! Great for making ahead.

Apple Coleslaw

Reviewed: Mar. 12, 2012
I made it exactly. Very good - found dressing a little bland and overly peppery for the tasters' tastes. Nice that it doesn't have sugar overload or swims in mayo like some coleslaws. Recipe doesn't make much dressing - if you use even half a cabbage, I think you'll need more (I used 2/3 of a cabbage = 8 cups.). So next time I will cut back the black pepper, add a nip of cayenne, double the dressing. P.S. I salt-soaked the cabbage after shredding it - my first time and definitely the way I will do it again to get the right texture and avoid milky-runoff-puddle.

Layered Lemon Dessert

Reviewed: Mar. 11, 2012
A very tasty dessert. I like the suggestion to make in a springform pan; will try next time. Definitely takes time (make a layer, cool it, make a layer, chill it...). Like others I worried about the vinegar b/c the filling smelled strong even after cooking but it did vanish entirely on the dessert.

The Best Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Mar. 5, 2012
Excellent. Have tried a few lemon square recipes and this is, in my opinion, the best so far. (Notes to self: following other reviewers, add 1/4 tsp salt to crust; use 2/3 juice + 1 extra tbsp of flour in filling. Crust is fairly thick. Maybe bake filling 5-10 min extra next time so completely set in centre.)

Truly an easy recipe - good for whipping up during a family games night. Very tasty.

Excellent. I halved it for 2 halibut steaks and we really liked it. The pepper gave it a nice bite. Wouldn't change anything!

Garden Veggie Pizza Squares

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2011
Either I failed this recipe or it failed me. Expensive ingredients, picky to prepare, crumbs/bits of veggie everywhere to clean up. It tasted good but the crescent dough broke easily when I tried cutting into squares. To follow reviewers' suggestions to use 2 pkgs of crescent rolls would, in my opinion, make it too expensive. Won't make these again; I'll enjoy someone else's.

They tasted fantastic. Mine did not look nice and round like the picture, so will have to try a better shaping system next time.

Chocolate Trifle

Reviewed: Feb. 20, 2011
Clearly a lot of people have made this, but here's my 2 cents. Very sweet and the brownies from a mix taste metallic to me... so not my fave but it's a crowd pleaser. I used REAL whipped cream (why not? just as cheap, not as sweet, better for you!) and next time I'll make real brownies to improve the taste.

Flatlander Chili

Will make again. Followed many reviewers' suggestions to replace the tomato juice with diced tomatoes. It was the right amount of spiciness for everyone (those who like it hot and those who don't!).

White Chili with Ground Turkey

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2010
Really, really good. It was the kind of recipe the company wanted to have. The cinnamon added something special; the spices were just right. I didn't change anything and wouldn't next time, including the food processing of the 3rd can of beans.

As previous reviewer noted, yield is off; I halved the recipe (used 2 eggs) and made exactly 42 minis. I didn't find them dry particularly. They were good.

Italian Spaghetti Sauce with Meatballs

Flavour is good. Easy to make. A little on the chunky/thin side for our tastes - I'd probably add some crushed tomatoes in lieu of the canned whole toms next time. Also should've let it simmer uncovered as per reviews. The meatballs were REALLY good.

Caramel Cream Frosting

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2010
Flavour is very good and I would make again just for that. One cooking problem: I followed reviewers' suggestions to caramelize the sugar WHILE boiling the sugar/cream/butter. So I poured in the hot liquid caramelized sugar and it hardened into clumps IN the boiling liquid. The frosting turned out fine (I just picked out the lumps).

Jan's Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 30, 2010
This was a moist, solid cake that the company all complimented. Maybe another reviewer has noted that the ingredients call for water but in the steps it refers to BOILING water. Note: I would NOT use boiling water or it would cook the eggs. (I used cold water.) This will be a cake I make again next time I want a no-fail, good-tasting, quick chocolate cake. [The power went out for 60 minutes - just AFTER I'd mixed the buttermilk into the batter! After waiting the hour, cake still baked fine!]

Cranberry-Pear Tossed Salad

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2010
I made this for a potluck and it was all gone. Recommended!! Due to nut allergies, I chose to substitute pomegranate seeds for the crunch and people actually commented on liking that. It does make a LOT of dressing. Also I couldn't taste the apricot nectar, mostly just the red wine vinegar, so I might tinker with the proportion next time. Blue cheese - I hate it but I used a mild version of it! - next time I'll use something even milder because I found it too bitter. (Note to self: I used whole jumbo dried cranberries and red pears.)
