Sausage Gravy

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2006
This is really good, but SO much better if it has the chance to sit overnight. When it's first done the flour is very easy to taste, but the next day all of the flavors have blended nicely.

Muesli

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2011
We just got back from spending time in Europe, where the muesli was cheap, delicious, and abundant. Muesli here in the US is WAY overpriced for some reason, so I decided to try to make my own. This is great, and tastes so similar to what I was missing with the following changes: I omitted the brown sugar and added 1/4 C ground flax seeds, 1/2 C whole wheat flakes, and 1/2 C toasted hazelnuts.

Oven-Fried Chicken

Really good! Would have liked it a little more salty, but I am a salt fan. Hubby liked it too!

Smokey Tequila-Lime Marinade

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2008
I wasn't going to be grilling my chicken, so I didn't use the liquid smoke, but other than that followed exactly; I marinaded the chicken overnight then used it to make jalapeno chicken. Awesome!

Caribbean Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2006
I was only mildly impressed by this dish until I tried a bite with the nectarine (In season). It really made the dish; I am making it with double or triple the amount of fruit called for. It smells really outstanding, but be prepared for messy preparation!

Blue Ribbon White Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 28, 2010
I have made this recipe at least 10 times and it never disappoints! It has a nice chewy but not dense texture, it rises beautifully, has a good even crumb, and tastes delicious. My favorite thing about this recipe, however, is that it (unlike most homemade breads) stands up to a thin slice. The only change I make is using bread flour.

Strawberry Banana Dessert

Reviewed: Aug. 28, 2008
I make this without the bananas, and combine the strawberries in with the boiling water and then pour it all over top of the angel food cake. Good use of frozen strawberries!

Absolutely the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2007
FINALLY!!! I waited 4 days to review this recipe, and the cookies taste good AND stay chewy for days. (At least 4!!) I have been searching for "the" chocolate chip cookie recipe, and I believe I have found it. Changed it to suit what I had on hand; used real butter and vanilla extract.

Chicken Pot Pie IX

Reviewed: May 3, 2007
Turned out deliciously; just couldn't quite go for that fifth star as I like a more savory pot pie. No complaints though! I also added one peeled, chopped potato and the filling was enough for two fairly shallow 9-inch pans. I also cooked the bottom crusts for about 5 minutes to avoid sogginess.

Basic Quiche by Shelly

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2006
Honestly, this recipe should get more stars. I used to get a quiche from a cafe down the street that closed its doors. I had been in withdrawal until finding this recipe, which is honestly even a little better. Thank you so much!

Fresh Strawberry Pie III

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2006
I had to substitute 3 TB flour in place of the corn starch, and used strawberry-banana gelatin in place of strawberry. I also coated the crust with cream cheese before adding strawberries. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all--especially with whipped cream!

Easy Whipped Cream

Reviewed: Nov. 14, 2010
I reduced the sour cream slightly based on previous reviews - hubby's first words after first taste: "we're never buying it in a can again."

Wisconsin Five-Cheese Bake

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2010
I too substituted 1 C sharp cheddar for the provolone and slightly increased ricotta & sour cream. I also used 1 package of rigatoni instead of elbow macaroni. Yumm!!

Homemade Chewy Granola Bars

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2010
I used 100% pure maple syrup instead of corn and omitted raisins. SO good, but don't hold together well since pure maple syrup is so watery. Much better than store bought granola bars, and much cheaper. They're now a "lunch box" staple. Thanks for sharing, Lavone!

Oven Roasted Potatoes

Reviewed: Jan. 15, 2008
I almost always love roasted potatoes, and these surprised me by how much better they were than any other recipe I've tried. I had run out of olive oil so used melted butter instead, and I doubled the red pepper flakes since we love spice! I served them as a game day snack with sour cream on the side. Thanks for the recipe!

Shrimp and Asparagus

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2007
This was very, very, very bland. I followed recipe and the end product was just boring. I tried adding salt, lemon juice, pepper -- still bland. and the recipe makes A LOT, so leftovers weren't thrilling either. sorry, but try a different recipe.

I've made this twice now and forgotten to pick up tomatillos at the store. It's so good like that, I'm almost afraid to add them now!

Egg-Free Low-Fat Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: May 18, 2010
don't make these expecting crispy-outside-chewy-inside cookies. these dont taste like that because they dont have copious amounts of fat. i thought they were wonderful as healthy cookie substitute - omitted raisins & nuts and added 1/2 C chocolate chips. toddler & diet approved!

Fruited Curry Chicken Salad

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2010
I used one whole roasted, seasoned chicken breast, and walnuts instead of pecans because I had them; I also omitted the onion. Served on whole wheat flat bread. I Increased pepper to 1/2 tsp and curry powder to 1 tsp. I'm glad I followed the author's suggestion and prepared it the night before I served it - the flavors had developed really nicely.

Split Pea Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 30, 2009
I've never made split pea soup before, and this was really awesome. I didn't have a ham bone, but I did have about 1.5 lb ham steak, I just threw it in there frozen and then cut it up about 1.5 hrs through simmering, and added right at the end. Also I didn't have any marjoram, and forwent the potato as I was out. Really really really really really satisfying!
