Grandmother's Polish Cabbage and Noodles

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2014
This is one of my daughter's favorites. I've honestly made it at least a million times! ;) Like other reviewers I've also used sausage (usually smoked sausage) instead of ham. Either way it's amazingly yummy. I sometimes add a large handful of those precut julienned carrots, just for color, and I think one could add lots of different vegetables as well. The basic recipe really lends itself to a sort of clean-out-the-fridge meal. The only other thing I do differently is that I add the meat at the beginning, with the veggies, and then let everything slowly sauté into the yummy goodness that is this simple and homely dinner. Oh, and I have never remembered to add the sugar and water at the end.

Butter Garlic Cabbage and Kluski Noodles

Reviewed: Jun. 14, 2013
Yummy and satisfying comfort food. I remember my mom used to make something just like this when I was growing up. Followed the recipe exactly, and even though the Kluski noodles were hard to find (they were on my shopping list for almost a month before I found them at a market), they proved to be so perfect in this recipe that I was glad I hadn't substituted some other noodle. Bonus: it was even BETTER the next day!

Cheesy Potato and Corn Chowder

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2007
I cooked the onion in four slices of bacon to add more flavor and used salt-free whole kernel (water and all) and creamed corn. I forgot to add the green chiles, but I don't think it mattered, because the soup was great. I like the gravy envelope-- what a great idea! It added a thickness to the soup. Froze well, too.

Chicken Tequila Fettuccini

Reviewed: Aug. 16, 2006
I will make this again, but with double the garlic/jalapeno/lime/tequila sauce mixture to the original 1 and 1/2 cups cream. This is because I like lots of sauce! Start reducing the "paste" right away, because it does take quite awhile to boil down. I think it was worth the wait, though-- and it's actually a very straight-forward recipe.

Portobello Mushroom Burgers

I've made these three times this summer, and they're great every time. They're good with feta, too.

Summer Tomato-Basil Soup

Reviewed: Aug. 6, 2006
The soup is a simple tomato flavor-- not really meant for a stand-alone dish, more of a side. It's quick, easy, and doesn't create a ton of dirty dishes. The best part, though, is that it tastes great! I chose to keep it a bit chunky.

Restaurant-Style Tequila Lime Chicken

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2006
I hesitated when I saw all the ingredients, but the reviews were stellar, so I thought, "why not?". First, it takes forever to get everything prepped. This is not a thirty-minute meal, not even taking away the marinate time. In the end, I really didn't think it was worth all the fuss. Good, but just okay, and all the work involved just took away from it even more.

Avocado Feta Salsa

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2006
Excellent-- I agree this is more of a guacamole than a salsa. It's really good, I think the cheese is the kicker. It turns the recipe into something more than ordinary.

Blueberry Coffee Cake I

Reviewed: Jul. 23, 2006
I followed the recipe as it was written and this coffee cake turned out only average. I don't think you should rate a recipe 5 stars if you had to make changes to get it there. That's just saying the original recipe wasn't worth 5 stars in the first place, and all those reviews about changing this or changing that were completely confusing. I think I would rather find a blueberry muffin or cake recipe that is worth 5 stars on its own.

Creamy Broccoli Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2006
This was easy. Based on other reviews, I pureed the broccoli/onion base. Then I added some finely chopped red peppers and chicken to give it texture and color. Don't let the soup boil after adding the cheddar- it will separate and you'll end up with something you didn't want.

A-Number-1 Banana Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2005
This was okay. I really wanted a banana cake, but this was more like banana bread. I'll pass on this and keep looking.

Ki See Ming

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2005
a good kid dish-- bland but tasty. i browned the sirloin first, then drained it on paper towels while the veggies cooked. i did add extra veggies, extra soy sauce, pepper, and just a dash of sesame oil, and i reduced the water by one-half cup. i don't know about serving it with bread or rice--you'll have a bunch of noodles in the dish already from the soup mix and adding more rice seems like carb overload...

Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2005
this soup was really good! i served it with grilled cheese sandwiches. i made a few changes to save time: i used roasted red peppers from a bottle (trader joe's has good ones), canned tomatoes (use a good brand- there is a difference!), and my wand blender to blend the soup (a potato masher would have worked, too). i brought leftovers to a couple of friends who had never had tomato soup before, and they just loved it! thanks for the recipe!

Easy Corn Pudding

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2005
this was so easy and very, very tasty! the best part was the top gets golden brown like cornbread, but the dish's consistency is that of a thick pudding. i used "no salt added" corn (but then added a scant teaspoon), threw in a small handful of grated cheddar cheese, and mixed in a can of mild green chiles on half of the casserole. very good!

Mom's Buttermilk Biscuits

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2005
these are great! check your baking powder and soda if your biscuits come out flat. these ingredients should be replaced once a year (i buy new just before the holidays, when baking ingredients are on sale). if you increase the buttermilk by a scant 1/4 cup you can make drop biscuits!

Buttermilk Biscuits I

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2005
they looked good, but they were so bland! i had a feeling they would be, based on other reviews and the lack of salt in the recipe. i wonder if the recipe was supposed to call for salt instead of sugar...?

Goulash Supreme

Reviewed: Dec. 20, 2004
i added a cup of green peppers and a cup of mushrooms (fresh); used a 28 oz. plus 14 oz. can of cut tomatoes; was very liberal on the spices, adding cayenne and cumin; and no tomato paste. i cooked the pasta in the pot with everything else- why clean something else when you don't have to? this dish turned out very flavorful- and SO easy!
