About this Cook
Hi! I grew up in Hong Kong, where I attended an international school. After graduation, I spent 4 years doing my undergraduate degree in Toronto. Now I'm back home after graduating THAT, and gearing up to see what the future has in store for me! My life already is full of Asian and Western influences, and this is reflected in my diet!
My favorite things to cook
I started out with baking, and continue to enjoy trying out new cookies and cakes. During university, I usually ended up recreating homecooked/healthier versions of my favourite "Cha Chaan Teng" dishes for meals. Hong Konger born and bred!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite food-related memory of my childhood is when family friends would join us for a dumpling-making party. We'd have a big pot of stuffing, stacks of dumpling skins and a dozen trays sitting on the table while everyone chatted and folded the dumplings together. Then we'd cook a ton and have a big dinner. I've sworn to teach this tradition to any children I might have in the future too.
My cooking triumphs
Bringing my Canadian friends a taste of homecooked China to their Caucasian taste buds. Also livening up parties and road trips with cookies and cakes. One occasion resulted in my contribution being demolished under 15 minutes!
My cooking tragedies
Setting the fire alarm off, natch.

Fresh Ginger Cookies
I was looking for a simple, chewy ginger cookie recipe...AND THIS IS IT! They came out in the perfect round cookie shape, perfect golden-brown colour, neat little cookie cracks, and tasted heavenly. The outside was crunchy, but the insides are wonderfully fluffy and soft. The spicy aftertaste was the cherry on top. I love that the ingredients are simple, but uses fresh grated ginger. As I was making the dough, I was initially worried that it was too wet (so I added a few tablespoons of flour), but then let the chilling do the work. Afterwards, it was completely fine. Keeping this one for sure!

Chocolate Chip Peppermint Cookies
Every time I make these for my a cappella group they're all gone in less than half an hour. Soft, chewy, delicious and really easy to make - though I did take another reviewer's advice and added crushed candy cane. Love it so much!!

Hong Kong Style Egg Tarts
Tastes very authentic! - at least for the filling. I made this twice and both times the pastry turned out very hard (I dropped one on the floor by accident and it didn't even CRACK). I noticed that it baked faster than the filling - which made it difficult to gauge time. The first time I actually burned the comparison to the other reviews, I feel like I might have made a mistake, but I followed the instructions as faithfully as possible. Maybe I'll try using premade tart shells C:
