About this Cook
I've been married over twenty years, and LOVE to cook! My teenage kids always bring their friends over to the house for dinner. I teach high school, so holidays and summers are a favorite time for me because I can cook more :)
My favorite things to cook
I love trying new things and new recipes. I can read a recipe and tell if it will be good. I have a knack for using seasonings, and hardly ever use salt. When cooking casually at home, I never measure and just eye-ball the amounts. This comes from knowing how flavors come together, and knowing the basics of cooking.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every holiday my entire family converges on my house. I always try to experiment with new recipes, but my family is starting to request the same ones...so now I experiment during the summer when I am off for summer break.
My cooking triumphs
Baking a wedding cake from scratch and creating the flowers from gum paste and/or royal icing.
My cooking tragedies
My grandfather owned three bakeries in the PA area. When I was in high school, I got the idea to try my hand at homemade bread. I don't think I kneaded it enough; it was as hard as a brick and we could use it as a door stop! I have improved A LOT since those first days.

Strawberry Spinach Salad I
This was an excellent addition to my Father's Day menu. Everyone was reluctant to try it, but once they did, they did not regret it! It is very good but the dressing was kinda sweet. Next time I will use just slivered almonds (using blanched is unneccessary), and less sugar, maybe upping the twang factor a bit.

Grilled Flat Iron Steak with Blue Cheese-Chive Butter
This was excellent - I love the combo of red meat and blue cheese. If you are having problems finding the flat iron steak, ask your butcher at your local grocery store and he can cut it fresh. It is actually cut off of the shoulder and is NOT a flank steak. Flank will give you a much diff taste and texture.

Pizza On The Grill I
I started grilling pizzas last summer after watching it on FoodTV. A trick we use is to grill the crusts quickly on a hot grill (about 400F), then flip them over so the cooked side is facing up onto a cooking sheet. We then bring the pizzas inside the house so that our teenagers and their friends can make their own pizzas using an assortment of toppings. As each pizza is created, we bring it back outside and finish cooking the pizza, with the uncooked side down on the grill. This time, we cook it on a lower heat (about 300F) so insure the cheese melts without the crusts burnning. We've tried putting toppings on the pizza on the grill, but it's just oo darn hot that way. Bringing them inside allow us time to make each pizza the way we want to.
