After reading the reviews and following several suggestions made by reviews I would like to make some recommendations regarding this recipe.
First, melt the butter when combining with the sugar, as stated in the recipe. This makes for a moist base when adding the flour mixture and easier to combine later on in the recipe and to spread in the pan.
I added 3 cups of cubed apples rather than the 3 medium sliced apples, this more evenly dispersed the apples and helped in the rising of the cake.
The addition of 1 teaspoon vanilla extract enhanced the flavor, as did the addition of topping consisting of 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, 1/3 cup brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, combined and dropped over the top of the cake prior to baking. This also added a crunchy topping and richness.
Finally, the recipe's listed time of 35 minutes is not correct, I found a baking time of between 50-55 minutes to be more accurate. Allow to cool to warm before serving.
This "brownie" was extremely popular and I needed to make it 3 times the first week.
