I am a mom of going on SEVEN (7), in my 30's, homeschooling & love making Indian and Asian Cuisine. My family considers me a "good cook" and my son states that "everything Mom makes is deee-lish-us!" --except on Indian night! Too spicy for the older kids but the 3 and 1 year old gobble it up! I love cooking & this site is my favorite!
My favorite things to cook
I LOVE to make my chocolate chip cookies, whole wheat-healthy pancakes, and Indian dishes, breads & desserts. I'm trying to use a lot of whole grain because it's so good for you, so I'm really getting into healthy cuisine... no more of this shortening business! I use coconut butter/oil if I need a shortening. No more partially-hydrogenated junk to clog us. I love to make breakfast things, it's really a challenge since there are really only a few different things traditionally for breakfast... my hubby's favorite is french toast with cream cheese inside & strawberries or fresh fruit & homemade lemon curd. I'm also glad to have a full blood Italian great grandmother & her son, my Grandpa, to teach me how to make REAL Tortellinis. There's no other way to eat them but as Tortellinin soup, hand made floating in a sea of chicken broth! Magnifico! Sheesh, they're not ravioli as my Grandpa says.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We like to dive into a grilled, brined turkey with spices and a lemon in the cavity every holiday season. It's wonderful! That, and homemade cranberry sauce with kumquats & dressing & real mashed potatoes made with the skins on, butter & goats milk... creamy & dreamy!!! My Italian Grandpa's beef jerky recipe. Excellent. (sorry, it's a secret!)
My cooking triumphs
Excellent Lamb Saag & Chapatis & Lassi for the day of our Lord's resurrection. It was a middle eastern feast! Delicious. I couldn't believe I made it! The Chapitas are a whole wheat flat bread & the rice we had the Saag upon was whole grain, it was so filling & healthy, we couldn't stop til' the pot was scraped empty!!!
Oooh! And Clone of A Cinnabon knocks EVERYONE'S socks of every single time I bowl them down with it! I cannot go wrong with it, tis a delight!
My cooking tragedies
Many of them... there are rough roads through a life-long ambition of becoming a good cook! I remember once we had company coming, my childhood girlfriend who always raved about my cooking & gave me a swelled head... she had been begging me to make my Banana bread she craves, so I indulged, forgetting the sugar!!! Ooooh it was icky! Luckily we sampled it before my girlfriend & family arrived! We all laughed about it, I made a new loaf & did it right, much to her joy when she arrived, that was a close one.
then another time I made a vegetarian lasagna for a total meat-eater guest, not for-known to me... it was NOT a happy meal. Forever since I ALWAYS ask first "what do you NOT like to eat?" before my dinner guests arrive! ...Word to the wise.
