Apple Raisin Cakes

Reviewed: Mar. 18, 2007
5 stars for delicious and nutritious. The only thing I changed was to add a chopped Granny Smith apple. My husband took a bite and gave me a suspicious look until I explained they they were healthy and had whole wheat flour and no oil in them. So he's been munching on them all morning.

Big Joe's Venison Steak in Chestnut Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2004
This turned out great! My husband raved about it, he even ate the strained carrots and onions as a side. I burnt the chestnuts so I left them out and could not find Madeira wine in time, so I substituted 3T sherry + 1T brandy.

Tomato and Avocado Salad

Great, even my husband liked it and he doesn't usually eat avocado in anything but guacamole.

Chocolate Torte Frosting

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2007
Turned out excellent! My husband will eat whatever type of cake I put this on. When chilled in the fridge and then whipped in the mixer it makes a mousse-like frosting.

Malaysian Beef Rendang

Reviewed: May 14, 2005
My husband (the picky eater) thought it tasted "weird" but I loved it. My grocery store carries tubes of pureed lemon grass, ginger, and garlic where the fresh herbs are located. But I didn't get the right chile peppers so it wasn't as spicy as it could have been. Will definately make again...he can have PB&J. ;-)

Irish Whiskey Flat Iron Steak

Reviewed: Nov. 21, 2010
Has a bite to it! People who don't like spicy food probably won't enjoy it as much as those of us that do. Very good and different option because I was looking for something different from sweet-salty or tex-mex.

Autumn Beef Stew

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2006
I don't think I'm going to brown the meat beforehand next time, it seems like an unecessary step. Because of other reviews I added about 4 tablespoons of flour and I still wouldn't call it stew and I did add 2 bullion cubes to give it a beefier flavor but my husband went back for seconds!

Slow-Cooked Ham 'N' Broccoli

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2006
It took a lot longer than 2 hours to cook, more like 4-6. But my husband loved it and asked me to make it again.

Black Walnut Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2009
Almost like my mom's recipe. I prefer the crust softer. Black walnuts are hard to find in Texas! It was irritating because at my mom's all I had to do was go pick them up in the back yard! I think I went to 4 stores before I found some, but this recipe definately brought back memories.

Gooey Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2010
Pretty good. I made them with chocolate cake mix. The batter was pretty stiff but sticky so I put it in the fridge for an hour or two. I got just over 3 dozen cookies out of this batch with a tablespoon sized scoop.

Slow Cooker Mongolian Beef

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2011
Turned out really well. I did cut the sugar in half and added some red peppler flakes as some others suggested and that was just right for me. Had to keep stirring the meat and sauce because the sauce was thickening on the bottom but was still grainy on the top. I added green peppers with the onion for the last hour of cooking time. I would like to try with broccoli too.

Coffee Liqueur Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce

Reviewed: May 8, 2010
Too soggy and I increased the bread and decreased the liquids. I also decreased the amount of coffee liqueur. The flavor is good but the bread to batter ratio needs some tweaking.

Aunt Dot's Brunswick Stew

Reviewed: Jan. 28, 2007
A bit peppery for me, but this is one of those recipes that if I don't fix it, my husband will make it for himself...so it's gotta be good.

Scottish Shortbread III

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2007
Yum! I used 2 c all-purpose and 2 c wheat flour because I ran out of all-purpose. I also baked mine in 2 9-inch cake pans cause I like my shortbread in rounds. Still came out great!

Original Irish Cream

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2006
Very good, I'm not really a fan of Bailey's but I had to try it before I give it out as gifts. I used half & half and 1 cup of canadian whiskey but everything else I left the same. I think this has more of a chocolate taste and less "bite" which is probably why I like it better

Cake Balls

Reviewed: Sep. 4, 2010
The first one I did red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting and a almond bark coating. No one liked the almond bark much but they ate the cake out of the middle. Secondly, I did cherry chip cake with a milk chocolate frosting and a chocolate coating with regular chocolate chips. The coating was soft and needed to be refrigerated but everyone liked the taste and texture better. Maybe a 50/50 mix of candy coating and chips would be better?

Lemon-Dilled Brussels Sprouts

Reviewed: Dec. 20, 2009
The sauce got 4 stars because my family was dipping the the seared scallops in it. I'm not a huge fan of brussel sprouts and I wouldn't make this again for the sprouts (I'll stick to my honey bacon glaze to make them edible.)
