About this Cook
I would LOVE to have my own cooking show, using all the appliances and gadgets that people buy to save time and money but use once or twice and then hide in a cupboard to collect dust. Let's dig out that slow cooker and that countertop grill and that rice steamer and really learn how to make the most of them with easy, idiot-proof recipes.
My favorite things to cook
Anything with intense flavors that I can whip together. It must taste "gourmet" even if it's straight out of the slow cooker!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love baking bread (though I cheat and use my bread machine on the 'dough' setting). I prefer to cook from scratch; I rarely cook from boxes or cans, except for pasta or beans or cream soup, unless I'm feeling VERY industrious, and then I'll roll my own pasta or soak my own dried beans. My one constant concession to the ready-made world is pie crust. My world would end without ready-made pie crust.
My cooking triumphs
My husband loves my cooking!
My cooking tragedies
I cannot make a decent scratch pie crust to save my soul.

Italian Sausage, Peppers, and Onions
This was great! I had chicken sausage in the freezer, a sweet onion in the fridge and a garden full of bell peppers. This went together FAST once the veggies were sliced so I'm not having to heat up the kitchen, and the flavor is great. Serving it with marinated cherry tomatoes from our garden. Excellent summer supper!

White Chili
I used this recipe as a jumping-off point. A can of great Northern beans, a cup of frozen corn, 1 cup salsa...chichen broth instead of water, sharp cheddar and chopped jalapeno pepper in place of the pepper cheese. And I tossed in a handful of collards and added some cumin. I nixed the ground turkey as DH isn't a huge meat eater, and he truly liked this. Cornbread is a must!

California Grilled Veggie Sandwich
I actually used this recipe as a jumping-off point for using garden-fresh green bell peppers. I used my George Foreman: first grilled the veggies, then assembled the sandwich and "panini'd" it. Didn't have focaccia, but I had Vienna rolls; didn't have feta, used mozz; didn't have yellow squash so I did without. Added deli sliced roast beef. And I had aioli so I used that instead of the mayo / garlic mixture. But the idea behind this sandwich inspired me to get creative with what I had in the fridge. Thanks so much!
