Cinnamon Coffee Frosting

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2008
WHOA this icing is waaaay sweet for me. I followed the recipe but stopped adding sugar after 2 cups because it was already insanely sweet. I ended up adding more coffee and some unsweetened cocoa powder to try to add more FLAVOR and less sugar. I added it to the Black Magic cake on this site and wasn't a fan of the combination. I'll have to continue my search for the perfect frosting recipe...

Black Magic Cake

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2008
I made this cake for a "cake party" (where all 15 or so guests had to bring a cake that they'd baked) and many people told me this cake was the best. It IS very good, very moist, chocolatey. The coffee taste is subtle, I used a hazelnut blend which was good. I also used the coffee cinnamon icing, which for me was way too sweet, I'd probably use something lighter next time. I imagine you'd be best off with a ganache drizzled on top, or a fruity topping. The cake is moist enough to serve without a heavy icing. Also, in regards to the sticking problem many mentioned -- I greased a 13x9 glass pan with Pam spray and it was completely fine. This cake is delicious, but not mind-blowing enough to be the highest rated cake on this site. I had very high expectations because of that, so that's why I took off one star. But it is definitely a winner, take it to any party and it'll get gobbled up.

Caramel Popcorn

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2006
This was everything I hoped it would be. It's a little time-consuming to have to stir the popcorn in the oven every fifteen minutes, but the final product is delicious! I didn't use as much popcorn as was called for, which meant that what I did have was more caramel-coated...(ran out of room in the bowl I was stirring it in). I also didn't need the last 15 mins of cook time (I have an oven that is usually too hot), so if it seems ready before the cook time is up, then you may want to pull it out. Great snack at my Oscar Party!

Toll House® White Chip Chocolate Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2006
These are the perfect cookies! So delicious. I recommend adding even more of the white chocolate chips to make the cookies chunkier and even more scrumptious - though I wouldn't recommend it for calorie-counters!!

Pineapple Chicken Tenders

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2006
Mmm, these were delicious! I followed some of the other reviewers' advice: I marinated most of the day (9-10 hours or so), which I think adds a lot of flavor and juiciness. I used about half the sauce to marinate and thickened the other half with corn starch and drizzled it on top of the finished product. I also added about 1/2 tsp ginger to the marinade, which adds a great flavor. Since I live in an apartment and don't have a grill, I went ahead and fried the chicken in the marinade in a frying pan, with pineapple chunks, which tasted great on top of everything. I served with some curry rice and it was a great meal! My husband kept asking, "When did you learn to make this?!" I think I'll be doing the kabobs for my next party...

Pita Chips

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2006
This recipe is GREAT! I have made it three times now and every gathering I take it to, they get gobbled up instantly! I followed the recipe exactly, but I would also recommend adding a tablespoon or two of parmesan cheese, it adds a nice flavor. The chervil is a great spice. I found it alphabetized as a "D" for "dried chervil leaves." I don't think I'll ever buy pre-packaged pita chips again.

Hummus III

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2006
I have made this hummus twice and I like the recipe. I think it needs a little more zest to it so I would recommend adding more lemon juice (which would help it blend better, as others mentioned.) This recipe goes very well with the Pita Chips recipe you can also find on this site.

Brooklyn Girl's Penne Arrabiata

Reviewed: Dec. 28, 2005
I enjoyed this recipe. I think the reason some people may have found it too spicy is that they are not accustomed to spicy pasta dishes. I would recommend reducing the red pepper flakes if you're not comfortable with spicy flavor. I followed this recipe, but added a few tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese to the breadcrumb mixture, which adds a nice flavor to the chicken. Would make this in the future.

Cranberry Sauce Extraordinaire

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2005
This had a really great flavor, I understand why everyone has said it would make a good pie filling, because you could really smell the fruity, cinnamon flavor when it was cooking! I'm not a fan of cranberry sauce, (I never understood what you do with it, really... sauce on turkey... weird) but I thought that this was really tasty. I didn't give it 5 because it didn't really get eaten at the table, so I'm not sure it was appreciated fully. I halved the recipe, beware that it makes a LOT, more than would probably get eaten just as a side with dinner. I also used Ritz crackers with cream cheese on them with a dab of the cranberry sauce on top, and that was tasty!

Awesome and Easy Creamy Corn Casserole

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2005
This was good and well-liked at the dinner table, but it was lacking a bit in flavor, in my opinion. I think it might be the sour cream which makes the inside of the casserole a little too bland, though I'm not sure what I would add instead.

Marbled Pumpkin Cheesecake

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2005
Perfect! I made this pumpkin cheesecake for Thanksgiving dessert and everyone loved it and were so impressed that it was homemade! For me, the marble effect came out perfectly. It might be because I refrigerated the batter (both the pumpkin flavored and the cup of plain batter) for about half an hour while I was making the crust. I think this made the two batters a little firmer, so they held their own a bit more. I liked the flavor of the crust, but it browned too quickly, which made it more bitter. It might have to do with the variety of gingersnap you use... next time, I might try just a milder gingerbread cookie to avoid it darkening too much. Also, the bake time was way reduced for me, it only took about 30 minutes (my oven is always too hot) so I would recommend checking in on it before the 55 minutes suggested, in case it bakes more quickly. Otherwise, delicious recipe and definitely a crowd pleaser!

Orange Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 20, 2005
I wish I could give this recipe a better rating but I'm afraid I was disappointed. Don't expect this recipe to make the kind of "orange chicken" you find at Chinese restaurants-- this chicken was a flour-y, goopy mess that my family wouldn't even eat. I'm sure some people would enjoy it, but not if you're expecting what you get at restaurants. I'll have to keep looking to find out how to make Chinese-style orange chicken.

Potato Casserole II

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2005
I personally wasn't a big fan of these. The sour cream taste was just too prevalent in the dish for my tastes, so if I made it again I would probably reduce the amount. I like sour cream, but not THAT much. I did like the idea of using potato chips to create a crunchy crust on a casserole so I may use that in the future. My husband liked them a lot (4 1/2 stars, he said) but I guess it depends on your tastes. DON'T make this if you don't like sour cream.

Award Winning Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2005
These were delicious cookies! I brought them to work and shared with my co-workers and they all loved them. One friend even said that they were the best cookies she'd ever had! I think next time I may try making them with butterscotch pudding, the vanilla is a bit mellow and butterscotch might be interesting. Great recipe, I recommend it to anyone!

Teriyaki Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2005
WoW, this was really tasty! I didn't have as much time to really marinate, so I don't think I got the full effect, but it was still delicious. Served with some chow mein and my husband loved it! Thank you for this simple but tasty recipe!

Three Cheese Garlic Scalloped Potatoes

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2005
WoW, I loved these potatoes, they were delicious. I followed the recipe with respect to the cheeses, using sharp cheddar, parmesan, and provolone, and these were great. I used Half-and-half instead of cream, as was suggested, so I would recommend this to others. Also, as others have said the butter could be reduced, mine WOULD have been rather greasy except that in the last half hour (when I removed it from the oven to add Parmesan on top) I drained the excess butter from the pan, because it was looking too greasy. I will definitely make this again, but probably with only a little bit of butter.

Tomato Florentine Soup II

Reviewed: Jul. 13, 2005
The broth was a bit too thick for my tastes, and as a previous reviewer said, the veggies were a bit undercooked. Tomato Florentine soup is not the same thing as plain Tomato soup and usually I like Tomato Florentine broth a bit thinner and more seasoned. My husband enjoyed it but I think if I were to make this again I would cut back on some of the tomato ingredients (most likely the paste) and add more chicken stock for flavor and consistency. I would also recommend adding some of your favorite soup seasonings to spice it up a bit. Not a bad soup, just nothing amazing.

Rich and Simple French Onion Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 5, 2005
I don't know whether I did something wrong, but this soup did not turn out for me at all. The oil and butter separated a lot from the broth, making it kind of greasy on top without much flavor. I think the recipe may depend a lot on the quality of the beef broth you use. I'm not sure, but it turned out pretty disgusting for me. My husband and I ate a few bites before he stopped me and said, "Let's get takeout."

This recipe is a great base that can be modified to your liking. I changed out some of the veggies and cheeses, and it was delicious. My husband also loved it.
