Counter Intelligence: Confessions of A Working Mom

Not sure how I nominated myself to cook for our family New Year's gathering, but I also managed to "test" my abilities to make posole and enchiladas from scratch.  I've never made posole before and homemade enchilada sauce I did once before but threw so much stuff in it that I didn't record any of my ingredients and have been unable to duplicate since.  On top of my "quick fire" challenge, I'm testing myself on critics more intense than those on Top Chef...my family.

Once I got everything to my mom's house and pretty much had everthing tabled, I volunteered to take my helper home so I wouldn't actually have to see the initial reactions from everyone.  I was gone all of 10 minutes and walked in the door to a quiet house.  If you know the Mexican family dynamic, walking into a silent house could mean A: they were all disappointed and got quiet when they heard the door open, or B: loved it so much, they were silenced by the pure enjoyment of food.  My wonderful son, probably picking up on the fact that I walked into a silent house of 15, remarked "Mom, everyone was just saying how wonderful you food was".  (Yay, Joseph, my hero!).

I'm starting off 2011 to a great culinary start!!  New traditions...where I'm picking up where my mom is leaving off.  Giving her a break to enjoy family gatherings the way she afforded me all my life.  i just wish it was as easy as she made it look.

I'm looking forward to another wonderful year of creating great memories with food.  Hope you will too...

I'll be posting recipes & pics on how I pulled off posole & enchiladas that were apperantly a big hit with my biggest culinary idol...not Gordon Ramsey, Julia Childs, Wolfgang Puck. or any other celebrity chef..., but MY MOM!!!

God bless her and God bless all of you!!!

Having your Mom as your culinary idol? How totally cool is that! Good on ya and happy new year to you and yours. I won't wish you riches, sounds like you've plenty. Randy (Raedwulf)

It is wonderful that you have taken the family traditions over, especially since your Mother can enjoy watching and beam with love and pride for you.She raised a very lovely daughter.

About Me
Born in Mexico...raised a California girl, I'm always trying to find my roots with my cooking. I have a big family with my mom as matriarch and master cook. So I have some big shoes to fill.
My favorite things to cook
I love cooking food that my mom always made when we were younger. She doesn't really have any recipes, so it's a challenge. Every time she cooks, it's a unique experience since variations on ingredients are never the same. I also love Mexican food El Paso style. I would like to dabble more in Italian and Filipino dishes. My all time fav is BBQ and down home Southern comfort food.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I come from a Mexican Family. Family gatherings center around the kitchen and dinning areas. I love having family around the kitchen cooking, sitting around the dinner table talking, laughing, joking, drinking and eating.
My cooking triumphs
Mastered flour tortillas in 2013!!!
My cooking tragedies
That I mastered flour tortillas in 2013...I think I gained 5 lbs in one week.
