Just a quicky post to say that I made the best lasagna I've ever made last night.  Another dinner pressed for time and my baby's birthday was yesterday and of course he was requesting lasagna.  As if I had all day to brew a sauce, shred mozzerella, boil noodles, make roasted garlic… MORE

What a wonderful and blessed Easter we had...and crazy busy!  I'm not sure what compelled my niece to have her son's birthday party the day before Easter, but she did and somehow I got bamboozled into making Easter dinner for my family.  Which would not have been so bad if A) I wasn't told the… MORE

Hey everybody.  Or nobody.I just have to say that their ain’t nuthin sexier than a man who can cook!!!  Even a man who will even attempt to try to cook will always have a special place in my heart.  That is why I’ve “learned” my boys how to, at the very least, make a scrambled egg.  They’re even MORE

Just a quick heartwarming holiday story. It’s about Tias and Tamales. This holiday season is a pretty significant one for me.  This is the year that I am documenting one of the most prized of my family traditions…tamale making.  My mom and Tias (aunts in Spanish) and cousins over the last 50… MORE

Boy has it been cold!!!  For California that is.  So I don’t wanna hear from you folks back east that us whiney Californians don’t know cold.  You’re right, we don’t know cold.  But for us this is cold.  Promise me that, and I won’t balk that you guys don’t know what cold is in comparison to the MORE

I’ve seen the artistic craze of Day of the Dead merchandise a lot in recent years.  I’ve even been to a Day of the Dead themed wedding, which I totally loved.  But Day of the Dead isn’t just about painted skulls, even though I haven’t met a painted skull I didn’t like.  Growing up in my American/ MORE

Hay yay yay!!!  There must have been a writers strike because it’s too long between episodes of Cactus Crest.  Fear not, I’m back.  There was some contention over what type of chile is the best to use in an episode such as this.  Enter California dried chiles.  This is a thick skinned character MORE

In this titillating episode we meet the main character of Cactus Crest.  He’s a meaty character!...The bones and marrow of our little story.  No really, he is the bones and marrow of this story and specifically this dish.  And before you get squeamish, before I translate espinazo, let me start by MORE

About Me
Born in Mexico...raised a California girl, I'm always trying to find my roots with my cooking. I have a big family with my mom as matriarch and master cook. So I have some big shoes to fill. In the meantime, I work full time and am raising 3 kids (a husband) and the ugliest dog in the world.
My favorite things to cook
I love cooking food that my mom always made when we were younger. She doesn't really have any recipes, so it's a challenge. Every time she cooks, it's a unique experience since variations on ingredients are never the same. I also love Mexican food El Paso style. I would like to dabble more in Italian and Filipino dishes. My all time fav is BBQ and down home Southern comfort food.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I come from a Mexican Family. Family gatherings center around the kitchen and dinning areas. I love having family around the kitchen cooking, sitting around the dinner table talking, laughing, joking, drinking and eating.
My cooking triumphs
Baking a homemade pie from scratch. And anytime I can get a thumbs up from my family is a triumph.
My cooking tragedies
Trying to master homemade flour tortillas. I know I'll never get them like my mom's, but I'll die trying. Anytime my husband pours ketchup over a dish that I have taken time to prepare and present is a Shakespearean tragedy of the worst kind.
