Mom to teen girls and full time student. Time conscious, champagne tastes on a tapwater budget. Prefer spicy and savory food. Desserts always welcome, particularly fruit, nut, butter pastry and booze(yeah, I'm the one who actually eats the fruitcake loaf!)
My favorite things to cook
Chicken Parmesan, peanut chicken & vegetables, griddle cakes, grilled vegetables (burnt mostly!) and cookies from scratch.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother is a wonderful cook with first gen deep southern Italian heritage but her dishes are very down home-American, a la the Betty Crocker Cookbook. Everyone loves her cooking and I didn't get all the best of her skills passed on to me. My daughters each have their own culinary skills, one takes after the roots of her father and is very good at southern food. The other is obsessed with Japanese cuisine and makes wonderful dishes inspired by the home kitchens of her friends.
My cooking triumphs
I have been officiated as the Master Chef to perfecting the best West Coast rival to the NYC chicken parm cutlet! (ego? what ego?)
My cooking tragedies
I refuse to give up my cast iron griddle. Was great when I had an open and spacious kitchen, now I'm in a condo with a galley kitchen without elbow space nor ventilation for my hot & smoky ways. The local Fire Dept knows when dinner's done at my place.
