Cucumber Sandwich

Reviewed: Nov. 16, 2004
I never thought a sandwich could be a 5-star recipe, but this one is! My husband wasn't too thrilled when he saw what I had prepared for lunch, but even he had to admit that it was delicious. My only changes: I used half the vinegar and oil (they add a lot, but I think 1 tsp. each would be too much), substitued onion for pepperoncini, sliced the avocado instead of mashing it, and left out the sprouts (because I didn't have any - but they're probably a good addition). The sandwiches came out looking beautiful (not a mess like other reviewers commented...) and tasting great!

Fried Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2004
These sticks are better when breaded in a different order. First dip the mozzarella into the flour mixture, then the egg mixture, and then the bread crumbs. This will make a better coating so the cheese stays inside. Otherwise - delicious!

Toasted Garlic Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2004
A real 5-star recipe. I made it on French baguettes instead of Italian bread. The cheese adds a lot, but it's also delicious without it.

Chicken and Mushroom Saute

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2004
This recipe was simply extraordinary. It was easy to make, requires only simple ingredients that I keep around the house, took about half an hour to do from start to finish, looked gorgeous, and tasted terrific! It truly is a 5-star recipe. The only thing I changed was that I used 1 clove fresh crushed garlic instead of the garlic powder. Also, next time I might cut back on the mushrooms - I thought there were a lot (although I really like mushrooms). Not a bad thing - just a thought. Enjoy!

German Potato Pancakes

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2004
I made these as latkes for a Chanuka party and they were a real hit! I had to triple the salt, though - and some people still added their own. It's a good idea to squeeze the excess water out of the shredded potatoes before mixing with the rest of the ingredients. Terrific with sour cream or applesauce!

Cream of Spinach Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2004
If I could give this soup 6 stars, I would - and that's the first time I've ever felt that way! (I'm usually stingy about giving five...) The soup came out thick, creamy, and delicious. I didn't have any problem with it thickening, even though I used 1% milk. It was way better than I expected - it's a bit expensive for me to make (spinach costs a bunch where I live) but it's worth it!

Veal Chop with Portabello Mushrooms

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2005
This recipe was something special. I usually just grill or broil veal chops - this was only a bit more work, but looked and tasted incredible. I did use dried instead of fresh rosemary, because that's what I had in the house.

Home-Fried Potatoes

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2006
Wow! These potatoes were absolutely delicious. I first tried them as a side next to fried chicken, then as a brunch served with sour cream. I can see myself making these again and again. I did add some garlic powder, as per previous reviewers, and just fried the onions directly with the potatoes to save time - there's no need to do it separately.

Grilled Asian Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2006
This recipe was simple and delicious. I did marinate it for longer than called (about an hour) simply because that was convenient, and I would do that again in the future as the taste was good, certainly not too strong. Also, I used 1 t. ground ginger since I didn't have the fresh and I fried instead of grilling the chicken. If you want sauce to pour over, I would suggest doubling. I served it next to fried rice, and I think grilled or sauteed asparagus or steamed broccoli would go great with it as well. A keeper!

Exquisite Pizza Sauce

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2004
This was a great sauce - easy to make and very flavorful. Following other reviewer's suggestions, I cut the honey in half the first time I made it, and it was STILL too sweet! Now I put in only 1/4 of the honey, and that's perfect. Enjoy!

Jamie's Minestrone

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2004
This soup was really delicious. The entire recipe makes a lot of soup - I cut it in half and it made 6 servings. The other changes I made were: 1) twice the garlic, 2) a little less carrot (2 for a half recipe), 3) 1/4 c. wine for a half recipe, 4) I substitued dry for fresh herbs (make sure to adjust measurements - 1 tsp. dried oregano for 1 Tbsp. fresh, 1/2 Tbsp. dried basil for 1 Tbsp. fresh), 5) I left out the spinach, because I didn't have any, and the green beans, because I don't like them. I came out with a hearty, flavorful, and truly delicious soup that adds a lot to any meal! I highly recommend this recipe.

Baked Ziti I

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2004
I made this without the beef, and it was still delicious. Next time I won't bother with the layers, just mix together the ziti, sauce, sour cream, and mozzarella cheese, then top with the provolone and parmesan cheese. I don't think any baked ziti recipe could deserve 5 stars, though - it's just a simple dish that you don't really need a recipe for.

Crispy and Creamy Doughnuts

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2004
These were my first successful donut attempt! After my last failed attempt 2 years ago I thought I would never try again, but I'm so glad I did! The donuts were light and delicious. Only 4 stars, though, because 1) I had to add an extra cup of sugar, 2) The donuts themselves (without the glaze) are a bit bland, and 3) If you cut big donuts, the insides will still be raw when the outside is done. Overall, though, a pretty good recipe - I'm sure I'll be making these again.

Jay's Signature Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2004
The texture of this crust was great - chewy but firm. It's not a 5-star recipe, though, because the taste is a bit bland. Also, you need WAY more flour than called for to get the dough anywhere near workable. Not a bad recipe overall, though, and I probably will make it again.

Creamy White Layers

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2004
This cake was ok, but not great. It's quite dense and not too sweet. It does go terrifically with fresh strawberries, but there are much better white cakes out there. I can't see myself making this cake again.

Crispy Orange Beef

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2004
The first thing I have to say about this recipe is WAY TOO MUCH GINGER. I even put in a bit less than called for, as per other reviewers, and it was still much too strong. I suppose that if you change that the recipe would be good, but I've been burned on this one and probably won't try it again.
