About this Cook
I'm a 25 year old university student/entrepreneur, married to a brilliant photojournalist. Our "two children" are a Boston terrier and an orange tabby cat with a Greta Garbo complex. We love to host parties, try new foods, and dance the cha-cha. I spent some years in Hong Kong, and that's shaped my life greatly.
My favorite things to cook
Cantonese dishes, pastas, all types of things with goat cheese and roasted vegetables, desserts, and sushi (not that we cook it!)
My favorite family cooking traditions
I come from a family of non-chefs (my mother just heats up frozen things), but my husband is from Japan, and his family makes DELICIOUS meals, and I try my best to copy his mother's recipes here in Canada, with ingredients she mails to us from Kyoto. Husby used to work in a sushi restaurant, so he's got some mad knife skills.
My cooking triumphs
I love to bake, and prepare large feasts for my husband on special occasions. I don't want to brag, but my cheesecakes get stellar reviews.
My cooking tragedies
I'm overly curious, and I've tried far too many of those weird recipes other people shy away from. The results have been far from palatable.

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies
Absolutely delicious! But I think it does need a bit more vanilla - like 2 tsps plus.

Downeast Maine Pumpkin Bread
Absolutely delicious! I tweaked the recipe quite a bit, as I was making it for my toddler and it needed to be healthier. I doubled the recipe and used 5 c ww flour, and 2 c white, halved the sugar and used all brown sugar (and it is still lovely and sweet! Can't imagine how sweet it would have been had I not halved it), used applesauce instead of oil, added 3/4 c wheat germ, 1 c flax seed, 1 c walnuts, and 1/2 c dried cranberries. I made a cream cheese glaze for the adults, and it was a huge hit! I made 2 bundt cakes and one loaf pan from a double recipe, and will be making it again soon! Next time, I want to top it with toasted pumpkin seeds.

Blueberry Cheesecake
I did not care for this recipe. I bake a lot, but was in a mad rush and couldn't find my go-to recipe, so I chose this one. Firstly, the crust needs to be baked separately for 5 mins. or so, otherwise it just doesn't come together. I also think the cheesecake should be baked in a water bath or something - mine cracked HORRIBLY all the way to the bottom. I will not even touch this recipe again.
