Margarita Cake

Reviewed: May 5, 2014
Delicious with these changes: White cake mix, lemon pudding, lime instead of lemon juice, and double the glaze. For the moistest cake, poke holes in hot cake and pour 1/3 glaze over it while still in the pan, then wait 10 minutes, turn out cake, poke & glaze with another third (a pastry brush was helpful), then add more sugar to remaining glaze to thicken it and drizzle that over cooled cake.

Chef John's Caramel Chicken

Reviewed: Apr. 28, 2014
PHenomenal. Halved the recipe and cut the chicken into small pieces, not quarters-- but otherwise followed it exactly. I practically licked my plate. I read other reviews that said it was too salty or fishy and am glad I disregarded them because I didn't find it to be off in any way. I could have it again tomorrow.

Best Spinach Dip Ever

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2014
Delicious. My mom has been making this since the 70's. I replaced the sour cream with Greek yogurt and it turned out great.

Slow Cooker Mongolian Beef

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2012
Delicious!! I used boneless beef short ribs instead of flank steak. Usually I'm not a fan of the slow cooker because most everything I put in it tastes like boiled meat. But this recipe (with the short ribs) was amazing.

Nana's Southern Coleslaw

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2012
Loved it. Just like KFC. I substituted 1-16 oz. bag coleslaw mix for the cabbage, carrots, & onion. Didn't do any additional chopping. Delish.

Fig and Olive Tapenade

Reviewed: Jul. 3, 2010
DELISH. I put the tapenade on cucumber slices and topped with crumbled goat cheese. Feta would have worked too. Really different and elegant and tasty.

Sangria! Sangria!

Reviewed: May 30, 2010
This was GREAT, just like I remember from Spain. I left out the cherries, sugar & club soda. However, next time I will only let the fruit stay in for about 8 hours. I noticed that it tasted fabulous then, but after I let it sit overnight, the rind gave the sangria a bitter taste.

Chantal's New York Cheesecake

Reviewed: May 4, 2010
After 1 hour the middle looked so wiggly I was sure it would turn out sunken and raw. But I turned off the oven and waited a few hours and it was perfect. It tastes exactly like NY Cheesecake should. It freezes well too. I added sugar to the crust but otherwise followed the recipe exactly.

Black Bean Brownies

Reviewed: Apr. 30, 2010
I'm giving them 5 stars but that's for "Black Bean Brownies", not "Super Decadent Real Brownies". In other words, they're not as good as real brownies, but they're fantastic considering the main ingredient is beans. My super-picky kids both asked for seconds -- even after I revealed the "secret ingredient"-- and I could feel good about giving them seconds!

Mulligatawny Soup I

Reviewed: Apr. 24, 2010
Delicious. I gave it a whirl with my immersion blender at the end which helped give it a creamier consistency. I omitted the cream and just stirred in some 1% at the end but it didn't even need that. Tasted like it had been cooked all day long. I can't wait to make it again!

Julia's Easy Slow Cooker Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2010
A little salty but overall really good, especially for how easy it was. I put it over brown rice.

Too Much Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2009
FANTASTIC. I've made it dozens of times and always make it exactly as recipe states. To those who don't like the "crispiness": Make it a day ahead. My son always waits to eat it the second day, when it's soft and even richer tasting. Great dusted with powdered sugar or drizzle some melted cream cheese frosting over it.

Savory Garlic Marinated Steaks

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2009
I didn't have the liquid smoke but it was still great. It didn't taste like balsamic vinegar or soy... just a very good enhancement to the NY steaks.

Peanut Butter Kiss Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 24, 2009
These stayed chewy for me. I did the white/brown/confectioners combo. And instead of kisses, I made thumbprints and filled with melted chocolate frosting. Super easy, attractive, and SO GOOD.

Pan-Seared Scallops with Pepper and Onions in Anchovy Oil

Reviewed: Sep. 13, 2009
Really tasty! My kids never even knew there were anchovies in there. I agree that the peppers & onions should be cooked first & set aside, the scallops cooked next, then recombined. I served over thin wheat spaghetti.

Tender Onion Baked Chicken

Reviewed: May 27, 2009
Really surprisingly tasty and satisfying. I omitted the extra salt & pepper and only used 1/2 packet for 4 chicken breasts. Just sprinkle on as you would any seasoning, you'll know when to stop. Pour the melted butter on first so you don't wash off the soup mix, but go easy enough on the butter that the onions have a chance to get crispy. I served w/ plain white rice and a salad. 4 breasts only took 23 minutes to bake, by the way.

Amazingly Easy Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 16, 2009
Delicious! I added a cup of raisins, rinsed with hot water, before the milk. Also added 1 T. lemon juice to milk instead of buttermilk. Basted w/ half the milk/butter mixture but might not even bother next time.

Waikiki Cornbread

Reviewed: Nov. 9, 2008
This is similar to the cornbread our sorority house cook used to make. We LOVED it and would fight over it. Hers had less baking powder (1 t.) and cornmeal (3 T.) and more milk (1 1/2 C.). Maybe that makes it less crumbly because I don't have that problem. Everyone who tastes it asks for the recipe. One family friend even made it a new tradition at her house for Thanksgiving. But it is sweet-- I even eat it with ice cream sometimes :)

Cheese Ball I

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2007
I rolled it in chopped walnuts & parsley. Pretty & yummy. To those who said it tasted like an MSG Ball: Come on, it's a cheeseball. People who eat cheeseballs usually aren't bothered by synthetic-tasting things. I sort of agree with the MSG comment but I had to admit, I couldn't stop eating it. Then I made another cheeseball with more "pure" ingredients-- and found myself craving the Ranchball. So this is the one in my recipe file, not the pure one!

Honey Bun Cake I

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2006
I loved it. But I love sweets, boxed yellow cake mix, and cinnamon. If you dislike yellow cake mix you probably won't like it. I put all the batter on the bottom, topped it with the honey/sugar/cinnamon, and ran a knife through just the top 3 things to mix a little. Best warm.
