Me & Kitty (named after a book)
About this Cook
59 year old fart. Type 2 diabetic with a triple bypass.
My favorite things to cook
1) Bread, bread & more bread 2) What I call Fred's messes [throw a bunch of stuff together in a pot & hope for the best (different meats, potatoes or pasta, lots of veggies, gravy or tomato sauce & anything else I find laying around the pantry)]. I like them & they're fun to cook, my wife loves me and tolerates them.
My favorite family cooking traditions
American - I have my grandma's 1907 Lowney's cookbook. She bought it when my grandparents immigrated here.
My cooking triumphs
Used my grandma's pot roast recipe (so does everybody else, but all freinds & family say mine is the best) Whenever, someone in family wants pot roast, they invite me over to cook it for them.
My cooking tragedies
Too many to list here, but I have fun trying.

Russian Black Bread
My Ukrainian wife liked it!!! I first baked it as is, came out great. However, the 2nd time I made it I subbed 1 cup of the bread flour with whole wheat instead. (ran out of bread flour) I also added 2 tablespoons of gluten and used an extra 1/2 teaspoon of yeast. It came out more soft & fluffy and less dense. A good tasting & well balanced bread. The vinegar is a must.

Honey Wheat Sandwich Rolls
I baked these for Thanksgiving. Made dough in my bread machine, baked in the oven. Everybody liked them. I expected a little sweeter taste.

Bread Machine Pumpernickel Bread
I'm kind of new to this. I've been bread machining for 5 months now. I've been looking for a good pumpernickel recipe. I tried 4. One really sucked. 3 others that were OK, but my wife didn't care for them. JACKPOT = This one is wonderful & my wife loved it. Great texture (I used the gluten) & taste. Do use the caraway seeds, they're a nice touch. I made it yesterday morning & it's gone now with only wife & I eating it, couldn't get enough. Went great with my wife's bean soup.
