Spinach and Feta Turkey Burgers

Reviewed: May 25, 2012
These were pretty good! Before putting the patties on the BBQ I was sure they would fall apart, but they held their shape really well. The taste was good. I would add more garlic next time and perhaps some other spices, but otherwise pretty tasty. I served them on toasted whole wheat buns with tzatziki, a tomato and some extra feta. Definitely a healthier alternative to your traditional beef burger.

The Best Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2011
These were good, but I wouldn't say they were the best lemon bars ever. I did increase the lemon juice and added some lemon zest for a more tart flavour. Everyone said they were good, but there were lots left over, which says to me that they weren't that great. Not sure I will make this recipe again.

Melt - In - Your - Mouth Shortbread

Reviewed: Dec. 21, 2011
These were pretty good! I usually like a traditional shortbread, but I have to say I do like this recipe. I followed the advice of some other reviewers and whipped the heck out of the butter. I tried to pipe the dough, but for some reason it was way too thick and didn't work. I ended up making little balls and pressing them down a bit on the baking sheet. They turned out great!

Soda Cracker Candy

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2011
I've been making this for a couple of years since my aunt gave me the recipe verbally. I'm so glad I now have a hard copy to follow! I toasted some chopped pecans and threw them on top and they turned out great- you really can put anything on top of these!

Szechwan Shrimp

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2011
I was surprised how much I liked this! It was a super quick dinner with rice and bok choy on the side. I thought my boyfriend would complain that it tasted like ketchup (he can ALWAYS taste when an Asian recipe uses ketchup), but he just remarked on how good it was. I will definitely make this again. I used raw shrimp as that's what I had on hand and just spent as extra couple minutes cooking them.

Iced Pumpkin Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2011
I'm giving these a 4 star because they do taste good, but I'm not sure I would call them a cookie. They taste sort of like Tim bits (doughnut holes) or muffin tops. I'm pretty sure they would make fantastic muffins actually. I added a few more spices to the recipe (ginger and all spice) and used a mix of brown sugar and white, but other than that I followed the recipe. People at work say they're great and they're eating them up, but I'm not sure I can truly call them a cookie!

Baked Haddock

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2011
Pretty tasty! The bottom did get a little soggy, but as another reviewer said you can place it on a wire rack to prevent this. I also sprayed the bottom of the pan before baking and it didn't stick at all. I was quite taken aback by the high heat and length of time, but it came out great! I will definitely make this again, but maybe try to make it slightly healthier by not using the butter. The only changes I made to the recipe were adding pepper to the bread crumb mix and using Japanese bread crumbs because that's all I had. Turned out well.

Bacon Wrapped Smokies

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2011
These are pretty good. They do need some kind of dip with them- we tried dijon mustard, ranch and bbq sauce. Another reviewer suggested a creamy horseradish dip, which would probably be tasty. I found them to be very salty, which may be very obvious to most. You definitely don't want them to be the only snack you make, but as an addition to your football snack array, they're pretty good.

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2011
I don't know why I ever try different cornbread recipes when I really like mine! This one is okay, but I still swear by the Fannie Farmer recipe. This recipe had a very wet batter and I think it made it taste a little "eggy". I also had to cook it quite long to get it cooked through the middle in my 8x8 pan and the edges were very dark brown. Not bad, but I think I'll stick to my old favourite from now on.

Big Ed's Cajun Shrimp Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2011
Very tasty! I made a couple of substitions, not for taste but rather because of what we had on hand. I used a yellow pepper, regular onion and basmati rice instead of the recommended. I also threw in a handful of frozen corn to add some extra veggies. I made the soup base the night before and added the rice and shrimp after heating the soup back up. I think leaving it overnight really let the flavours deepen. Very good, I will definitely make it again!

Barbeque Halibut Steaks

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2011
Pretty good! I am particular when it comes to fish and I was surprised at the really good flavour of this recipe. It doesn't overwhelm the fish, but it gives a really nice mellow flavour.

Teriyaki Onion Burgers

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2011
I made the recipe as stated and it's not bad, but not great either. I liked the French-friend onions and I will definitely use that in my burgers in the future, but this burger was only okay. We found the texture to be a little mushy and there wasn't that much flavour to the burgers. May make again, but only with the additions that others have suggested.

Pretty tasty burger! I made it as written and it turned out pretty well. It fell apart a little bit on the BBQ, but was otherwise great.

Tex-Mex Burger with Cajun Mayo

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2011
Good burger recipe! I made this for a spontaneous BBQ one weekday evening and it was easy and tasty! Everyone loved the jalapeno and the cajun mayo was yummy too. Next time I think I'll make extra mayo and make sweet potato fries to dip. I'm giving it a 4/5 stars because I thought that while it was spicy it lacked a bit of flavour.

Whole Wheat Honey Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2011
This bread has really nice flavour, one of the best whole wheat breads I have made. I didn't have any shortening, so I used canola oil instead- worked fine. I will definitely make this again!

Spicy Chicken Breasts

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2011
We didn't really enjoy this chicken at all. I found that is was just spicy without any flavour. Will not make again.

Cocktail Meatballs

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2011
Good recipe, these meatballs were a hit at a party I had. This is almost the exact same recipe as in Joy of Cooking except that corn flake crumbs are substitued for bread crumbs and the amounts are slightly different in the sauce.

Quinoa Side Dish

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2011
We enjoyed this. It was the first time either of us had quinoa and I was glad I chose this recipe. It's easy to prepare and has great flavour. I will definitely make it again as it is a nice change from rice. I sauteed the garlic and onion in the butter with the quinoa as some of the other reviewers said to do as I wasn't keen on the idea of raw onion.

Indian Chicken Curry (Murgh Kari)

Reviewed: Feb. 18, 2011
I really enjoyed this recipes. I am constantly trying out different curry recipes and this one was easy to make and tastes great. I did add quite a bit more cayenne pepper, but that is just to suit our taste. I definitely agree with the reviewer who suggested measuring out everything before you start. It comes together very quickly!
