I am the only daughter of a first class chef. My serious cooking experiences began at age 8, before that I was allowed to "play" in the kitchen. I cooked my first family dinner, start to finish, at age 9. I've been cooking ever since.
My favorite things to cook
I love spicy foods. There is a difference between hot and spicy - hot refers to degree of mouth burn, i.e. peppers; spicy refers to amount of seasonings. I also like to add a little kick of heat to some foods. I enjoy contrasts - salty and sweet, spicy with bland- and making up new combinations.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every one getting together and bringing their "best dish" for a family dinner. We have two big pot-luck parties a year, one in July and one in December, where 40+ family and friends get together and catch up on all the news. We share favorite old and new dishes and swap recipes. It's frantic, noisy, messy and a blast!
My cooking triumphs
My first ever Thanksgiving meal that I made all by myself. I had just moved into my first apartment and was cooking for several new friends. The meal itself didn't concern me, but baking pies was never my strong suit. I worried myself to death for weeks then a frantic last minute phone call to Mom solved everything. She said two words, Sarah Lee. Dinner and dessert were a great hit!
My cooking tragedies
Using applebutter as a topping for a spice cake, ugh!
Scorching cream of potato soup and trying to salvage it with cheddar cheese, not!
Homemade biscuits, hockey pucks!
Pies - Thank God for Sarah Lee!!
