Summer Radish Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2013
Made this last night and loved it. I omitted the sugar (I just forgot actually), and used dried dill instead of fresh (for converting to dried herbs, remember the baseline of 1 TBSP fresh = 1 TSP dried), and it was quite the nice accent. I imagine the vegetable selections are exchangeable, but I prefer to eat vegetables that I normally don't (the radish!), and this combo of flavours works well. Leaving it to set is also definitely important - I taste tested multiple times during the hour, and it was definitely better the longer it sat. Will make this again, esp. in the summer.

Colonial Hot Buttered Rum

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2012
Very tasty but a little too buttery, even after 6 hours in the slow cooker. The leftovers went in the fridge in a jar, and a hard layer of butter re-formed at the top - once that was scraped off (and re-used in cookies), it was much better! Would use at least 1/3 less butter next time.

Garlic and Basil Goat Cheese

Reviewed: Jul. 29, 2010
Great! My first time making cheese, and it turned out fabulous. My partner bought goat's milk but it was not a pleasurable drink, so I figured I better do something else with it! Perfect texture, spreadable but still firm.

Fresh Southern Peach Cobbler

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2013
Great recipe. I used up the last of my summer canned peaches to make this, two jarfuls. I zoned out while I was making it (too many dishes on the go), and accidentally put 1/2 cup of each type of sugar in the wet mix, but it turned out fine (taste wise, perhaps not waist wise!). The cinnamon mix on top is a must, and the dough is lovely. I prefer thinner, almost-crunchy topping, so I would recommend sprinkling it in a crumbly, evenly distributed fashion rather than dropping spoonfuls, but that's preference. Fantastic fresh out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or dollop of whipped cream (or both).

Alissa's Vegetarian Lentil Meatloaf

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2013
Not a bad recipe! I made a few adjustment: used the whole egg, rather than the yolk, added more spices [oregano, basil, rosemary, garlic powder], replaced the wheat germ with ground flax and brown rice with white, and left out the pepper (due to what was in my kitchen), and it turned out good. I like the texture - something I miss as a vegetarian sometimes! It was hearty and had room for flexibility. And it tasted really good with this amazing BBQ sauce I have. Definitely recommend trying.

Dee's Health Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 18, 2012
My first homemade bread (with yeast) - great! I have a few kinks of my own to work out, but the recipe has lots of wiggle room for additions and flavouring, my boyfriend ate an entire loaf out of the oven.

Taco Seasoning I

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2012
Amazing seasoning base. I omitted the garlic and onion powder (didn't have any in my kitchen), and used garlic salt instead - cutting back on the 1 tsp. of salt to 1/2 to compensate. Tasted lovely with my bean/veggie filling for vegetarian tacos! Will definitely make again, and I agree - never using store-made stuff again.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2012
Amazing. My first time making apple pie from scratch - I used the crust recipe recommended too. I made it for a group of travelers at a small hostel in Argentina for an American Thanksgiving dinner, and it was raved over and gobbled up immediately! Will make again, exactly as the recipe is.

Baba Ghanoush

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2012
Very delicious. I roasted it over the open range without foil like TYEBUG suggested - it was amazingly smoky!

Swiss Chard with Garbanzo Beans and Fresh Tomatoes

Reviewed: May 25, 2011
Great recipe! Based on previous recommendations I added a healthy dose of cayenne pepper and crushed red pepper. I like more complex flavours too, so I added some diced garlic when I added the tomato and lemon juice, and topped it off with toasted pine nuts and crumbled cotija cheese at the last minute (I just had that cheese on hand, turned out lovely). Great cold too! Also, make sure you unzip the chard along the leaf/stalk, and coarsely chop the leaves, while finely chopping the stem, since the leaves cook faster.

Spicy Vegan Potato Curry

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2013
Great flavour! I am very picky about curries, but this one totally met my standards. Feel free to use whatever hardy vegetables you have (except for potato, that's a must). Also , pay attention to the 'spicy' part of the title - it's no lightweight! Keeps well in the fridge.

Connie's Zucchini "Crab" Cakes

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2012
These are a fantastic summer treat. I didn't have any Old Bay Seasoning, so I mad my own concoction of salt and other dried spices I had in my kitchen (garlic salt, chives, oregano, pinch of thyme, cayenne pepper and paprika), which turned out just as well. I also dried the zucchini a bit (sprinkle salt on a batch of paper towels, spread the zucchini on top and set over a strainer sprinkle a little more salt, squeeze lightly to get excess water out when done). I've brought it to several events with a dill-sour cream dip (whip sour cream with a splash of lemon juice and fresh dill), and people love it! Just make sure your patties are flat enough that they cook all the way through, as zucchini can still be pretty wet. Adding a bit of grated cheese (a lighter flavour, mozzarella, etc.) to the mix can be tasty too!

Outrageous Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 5, 2012
Great consistency, simple recipe. I added some peanuts, as I like these in my peanut butter cookies. Cooked it at just 10 minutes - it did need the proper cooling time to let all the inside melt still, but were delicious!

Janet's Rich Banana Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2013
Great recipe, but as other reviewers mentioned, it's much better to mash the bananas. I also use rock salt and throw in a pinch extra, as I like the crunch in my bread.

Alex's Raw Chocolate Pudding

Reviewed: Nov. 5, 2013
I haven't even let this set yet, but had to rate it - absolutely fantastic! It is just as creamy as regular pudding, and absolutely delicious. I'm standing here eating it out of the blender. Thanks so much!
