Aunt Norma's Rhubarb Muffins

Reviewed: Jun. 5, 2014
These are delicious! Unfortunately my 2 oldest boys did not like them (fault of the rhubarb, or perhaps pieces which were cut too large for their liking). I changed it up only a bit to suit our tastes and what I had on hand. I hadn't any white sugar on hand, so I subbed brown sugar for the topping. Nor did I have walnuts, so I just left those out. We also like to add a little rye flour to all our recipes, so 1/5 of the flour was rye and we only keep milk kefir around, so I used that instead of buttermilk. Lastly, I cut the sugar down to just 1 cup for the muffins. These were very moist. Thanks for the recipe!

Smothered Beef Liver

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2013
I'm giving this 5 stars even though I didn't love it. My 3 boys (each of whom are very picky at different meals) and my husband LOVED it. The kids asked for seconds and thirds. It was very tender and the flavour of the tomatoes and spices was nice, but I just don't really like the taste and texture of liver. I'll eat it for the kids, and when I do I'll be making it this way. Thank you!

Tzatziki Sauce

Reviewed: Jul. 10, 2013
This tasted great, but was a bit runny. It was fine until I added the lemon juice.

Maple Dill Carrots

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2013
This turned out nice, but wasn't quite as flavourful as I'd hoped. But it was still very tasty. I served it with barbecued sausage, homemade sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. It really complimented the meal.

Best Egg Rolls

Reviewed: May 12, 2013
Easy and delicious! Like most other reviewers, I added a bit more flavour. I used fresh minced garlic and grated ginger (2 Tbsp each), enough soy sauce to keep it a bit moist and ground beef (as I didn't have any pork on hand). My husband says they're the most delicious egg rolls he's ever eaten. I will definitely be making these again as my go-to recipe for egg rolls.

Beef Stew VI

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2013
So, I basically used this one for some of the spices, but it was really good. This was a stew from a previous meals roast and veggies. I added some homemade veggie and meat stock, salt and pepper, chopped up some celery (about 2-3 stalks) and some parsley and let it cook most of the afternoon. With some Sourdough Drop Tea Biscuits from this site, this was a most satisfying meal.

Sourdough Drop Biscuits

This worked out wonderfully! We used butter instead of oil and these were to die for, melt in your mouth, delicious. This will definitely be our "Oops, we need bread fast!" recipe. Thank you!

Chinese Chicken Fried Rice II

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2012
My husband loved this! I found it a bit peppery (I tripled the recipe for a large potluck gathering, so maybe that was the problem), but it was still very enjoyable.

Scottish Shortbread II

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2012
I made two batches of this, one following the recipe exactly and the other following the most helpful positive review (2oz sugar, 4oz butter, 6or flour, 300C for 30mins). They both turned out great!

Penne with Eggplant

Very tasty option for pasta. We love eggplant and can never find enough things to use it in. This is great!

Left-Over Turkey Pot Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2012
This was a relatively easy recipe to whip up (with three little boys, 2 of whom are teething). I used an "impossible" sourdough biscuit crust to make this even easier (I hate making pie crusts), left out the mushrooms (I love 'em, husband hates 'em), and it was delicious. This is my go-to recipe for white meat pies now.

Carrot Cake III

Reviewed: Sep. 16, 2012
Following the advice of the top-rated review, this was an excellent cake. I did only add 3 cups of icing sugar to the icing and I still found it a bit sweet. Will definitely make again.

Simple Swiss Chard

Reviewed: Jul. 13, 2012
I am giving this 4 stars because my husband, who gags on cooked greens, enjoyed it. I won't give it 5 stars because the balsamic vinegar was overpowering, even with halving the amount (only 2 Tbsp). Next time I'll add more garlic and only 1 Tbsp of balsamic vinegar.

Simple Maple Syrup

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2012
We love this and use it now rather than buying the extremely overpriced brand name stuff. We took some advice from other reviewers and simplified it: 2 cups brown sugar to 1 cup water, and let simmer for 5-10 minutes (it's fine if you don't want to simmer longer, it's just nicer if you do).

Cauliflower-Cheese Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 21, 2012
This was amazing! My husband, who is not a soup person and likes his food piping hot, ate this cold and couldn't stop snitching! Definitely a favourite in our house now. I followed this recipe almost exactly, except I used vegetable stock instead of water and margarine instead of butter and I puréed most of it at the end (leaving some chunks for texture). So good!

Asian Stir Fry Sauce

Reviewed: Sep. 21, 2011
This is exactly what I've been looking for! Strong taste, thick consistency, well balanced. I didn't have cooking sherry so I used cooking wine and I also took advice from others to lessen the corn starch and soy sauce (I did 3/8ths cup of each) and upped the garlic and ginger (1.5 times). It was delicious!

Marie's Easy Slow Cooker Pot Roast

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2011
This recipe was easy and tasty. I am only giving 4 stars because I only cooked 6-7 hours and it came out perfect. We used homemade chicken/beef/vegetable stock instead of water and took another user's advice to rub the pork with montreal steak spice and freshly crushed garlic. Also we doubled the vegetables.

Teething Biscuits

Reviewed: Sep. 7, 2011
They were hard to roll out and they tasted bitter. This could be due to the type of whole wheat flour we used. I made twice and used honey once and syrup the next time, but the taste didn't change. My son eats them, but doesn't ask for more.

Grilled Salmon I

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2011
My husband, who hates fish and usually gags when I convince him to try a bit, asked for seconds of this dish! I didn't have lemon pepper so I just used regular pepper and squeezed fresh lemon once the salmon was cooked. It was so delicious, I've been given the go ahead to make it regularly! Thank you.
