About this Cook
I'm an older retired guy living in the Philippines and enjoying life. Cooking at 5000 feet and sourcing ingredients here is like being in a perpetual detective story. I love it!
My favorite things to cook
I like to try different things, with admittedly mixed success. Chicken Cordon Bleu is my latest experiment. Taste is okay, but getting those suckers rolled up is a farce.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Comfort food and fast food of the Fifties and Sixties are my main areas of interest. Coney dogs, pizza, and ice cream.
My cooking triumphs
Better quality ice cream (for the Philippines), homemade pizza with a great homemade sauce, and uhh-gly French Crullers that melt in your mouth are the stuff I remember.
My cooking tragedies
Coney sauce, not chili, for hot dogs is a failure so far, can't find the right recipe. And gnocchi ... good gosh, how can you mess up gnocchi? But I did!

Janet's Rich Banana Bread
Very good, we have made this version many times though we have ended up modifying it slightly. Well worth trying and works in a bread machine nicely.

Crispy and Creamy Doughnuts
Excellent recipe. I had very good results. I had two changes. I didn't have shortening so I used butter. And I added two tablespoons of 'flour improver'. The doughnuts were excellent, the best recipe yet. I live at 5000 feet altitude and often have a problem with breads, cakes and such being very dense, due to the yeast over-expanding and then collapsing. But these came out very good. I look forward to making them again. But they are best eaten right away. For some reason, doughnuts lose their wow factor after resting overnight. Well worth the time and effort. Actually not much more work than other doughnut recipes that I've made before.
