Life Changing Opportunity

Do you ever read the blogs posted regarding roundups? Do you ever wish you could have been there or even invited? I always did. I would always read about the big roundups and even the mini ones right in my own back yard. Being too stubborn to make comments or invite myself I just read and wished I could have been there.

It's that time of year again where all of the roundup invites begin to surface asking one and all to join. Whether it be Mother Ann's Buckeye bash, mauigirl's Viva Las Vegas 2014, Candice's PNW roundup, gderr's Southern round-up or any other roundup that I may have missed. They can involve meeting several AR folks or just a one on one. These roundups can be well worth looking into.

It was on February 23rd, 2012 that I had a life changing opportunity when I commented on a blog that mauigirl had written regarding National Margarita Day. My comment was, "Ah, sitting poolside drinking a margarita with friends. Does it really have to be National Margarita Day to imbibe on a few? I don't think so." mauigirl's reply was, "bd.weld....I like the way you think:) It was then 2 minutes later mauigirl posted, "bd.weld.....I just noticed that you are from Victorville. Is there any possibility that you could make it to the 2nd annual AR Viva Las Vegas gathering at my place in Vegas on May 19????? It was right then and there that I had a life changing moment. My reply was, "I do have a weakness for Vegas! Got to clear this with DW but I don't see why not."

Now mind you, I'm this old, not so pretty guy that would be walking into a women's world. I wasn't quite sure what I was getting myself into, not to mention how I would explain to my wife how we were going to Las Vegas and meet up with a bunch of women. After nervously prodding the wife into making the trip reservations were made.

I clearly remember the first day there. We went to the Harley Davidson Cafe on Friday night for a meet and greet and dinner. The wife and I got there a little early and there were a couple of young ladies sitting at the bar. I wondered if they could be AR folks and thought of asking but didn't only to find out later that one of the young ladies was Bibi. After a short time the group started to gather out front and as I approached the group I thought to myself, someone brought their kid. I told you I was old, that kid was Allrecipes Elizabeth!

I was a man amongst beauty and never felt out of place. The folks we met that weekend have forever changed my life and my wife's as well. We have become family and the family keeps growing with each roundup. Any time we go to Las Vegas we call mauigirl and her husband to meet up somewhere. Here in Southern California we can meet at the drop of a hat whether in a group or just couples for a meal.

I remember one roundup at Marianne's where a few of the husbands attended. We had an absolute blast and since then the husbands realized that these roundups weren't tea parties and have attended many others.

One last thought before I stop rambling, I want to say to every buzzer and blogger out there whether we agree or disagree on subjects, through the good, the bad, and the ugly, I embrace you all as dear friends.

Love you too, dear friend! I'll never forget that moment when we met. You look nothing like your avatar, lol!

Mar. 22, 2014 2:20 pm
Dear friend, You really are..... I will be forever grateful to you and Mrs.db for your support and care during our son's cancer treatment. There are not enough words to say how much that meant to all of my family. I can't believe you graced us with your presence but I am so grateful you two came into our lives. I can say the same about so many here at Allrecipes. How lucky can we get!!!!!!

Bibi - Oh, how I wish I could go back through time and sit there and chat with you before the gathering. Yes I'm a little or should I say a lot older than my avatar.

I remember a time when a very kind man (yes, you) offered help with a recipe I had to create. And another time when you, your wife, and Marianne agreed to meet my husband and me as we visited CA while on vacation. And another time when you got me hooked on zoodles! I think the world of you!

Mar. 22, 2014 2:26 pm
mauigirl - Reservations were made the instant you advertised. I can't wait.

Mar. 22, 2014 2:29 pm
Paula - Aw, shucks. Thank you! That means a lot. Oodles of zoodles ;)

Mar. 22, 2014 2:30 pm
mauigirl - Isn't that the truth. "How lucky can we get!!!!!!"

Mar. 22, 2014 2:50 pm
Paula, I am still pouting that I missed you in So Cal. I was staying across the street from where you had lunch but I had no email so no heads up :( POUTING I tell ya!

Mar. 22, 2014 2:59 pm
this is from the southern conitgent---we love all ya folks...even if ya don't speak proper English :) I'm like everyone here, i wish the u.s. were either much smaller or travel was much cheaper! the only times I've been in calif. was to catch a plane either further west or north. i truly love the state...it's a very real dream to me. the whole northwest is amazing. i 2nd brian's thoughts about round-ups. go to one or better yet, organize one in your neck of the words! it's hard to describe the comradie you will feel. a large group of people from all walks of life that share one common goal of just providing a meal to others. imo, an act of love. attend a round-up...you will love these dopplegangers!

awwww hugs Brian as since I didn't go to that round up in 2012 but was there in 2011...and yes it forever changed my life to, I've not been to any since moving from one place to another but have meet up with a few here and there. I can't wait to go to Candice's in July ;-) and be able to met you and your lovely bride. I've kept many a friend from this site and look forward to meeting more.

Brian, my brother, truly we are family. How Randy and I cherish our times spent together with our AR brothers and sisters. The love, support, compassion and comraderie we share has truly been "life changing" for all of us. Thank you, dear friend, for sharing your life with us. You and Deb mean the world to me!

Mar. 22, 2014 3:10 pm
gderr... Your roundup is on my wish list! We shall see!

Mar. 22, 2014 3:16 pm
From an 8-9 hour-long drive to Cat Hill's by myself, arriving in the dark and the rain in the country, I stepped into welcoming AR arms and have never stepped back. Meeting peeps has been an addiction since then that thankfully my husband hasn't sent me to rehab for. I've made the best friends and look forward to new ones. I may sound like a broken record because I repeat this phrase in many of my Magnolia Blossom Adventure blogs, but if you have an opportunity to go to a roundup, please do so. You just never know where your next friend will come from.

Mauigirl, this is the first I've heard that you were across the street! Oh, that makes me so sad we didn't get together! I guess I'll have to dream of Las Vegas! Dreams do come true sometimes, right?

Mar. 22, 2014 3:33 pm
BTW, I never really went anywhere before other than vacations with my son and DH. Now I'm traipsing around all over the place. Give me wheels and a GPS (as long as it doesn't think I'm in New York!), and I'm good to go.

Mar. 22, 2014 3:41 pm
COME TO VEGAS PAULA!!!! Yep yelling!!!

Mar. 22, 2014 3:41 pm
Magnolia, I recall that GPS of yours sending you around in circles here in Summerlin :)

Mar. 22, 2014 3:54 pm
There is nothing like face to face meetings, and I'm happy I've gotten the chance to see most of those commenting here that way! Great blog!

Mar. 22, 2014 4:00 pm
gderr - Isn't that the truth? Yours is on my list to do but I may have to wait until next year.

Mar. 22, 2014 4:02 pm
mis7up - I'm looking forward to meeting you. Can't wait. Looks like 3 days of total fun.

Mar. 22, 2014 4:04 pm
Mauigirl, that is what is affectionately known as "the scenic route".

Mar. 22, 2014 4:05 pm
Cathy Myers - Yes we are! Roundups are a blast but when you walk it's like - let's get the party started.

Mar. 22, 2014 4:07 pm
Magnolia Blossom - You have to hold the AR record for the most roundups and miles traveled. It has been such a great pleasure to meet you and no doubt I will see you again.

Mar. 22, 2014 4:10 pm
jrbaker - Thank you. It truly adds another dimension to the AR realm when you meet face to face. I'm so honored to be able to meet so many friends.

Mar. 22, 2014 4:12 pm
Magnolia Blossom - I'm taking my gps to the PNW roundup. I wouldn't mind a scenic route.

Mar. 22, 2014 5:20 pm
Oh Gosh - What a LEAP OF FAITH! Man oh Man - I can't imagine not having all of you in my life! From Las Vegas to Seal Beach to Tom's Farms and picking Avocado's with Karen. From Seattle to Ontario. From Kansas to Maui. We are FAMILY. I remember NB Papa's reaction when I told him I had invited EVERYONE to our house. "Do you KNOW these people?" LOL - yes, yes I do! God bless our spouses for being as adventurous and trusting as we are! I am already excited for Vegas #3 - Watch out Las Vegas - AllRecipes is coming to town!

Mar. 22, 2014 5:22 pm
Note to self - bring a West Coast GPS - Magnolia Blossoms wants to take you to New York!

Mar. 22, 2014 5:30 pm
Baking Nana - You couldn't have said it better. I usually comment on blogs and rarely remember to return to see the reply's. I do now after that one moment that change my life and you my friend are one of them.

Mar. 22, 2014 5:41 pm
And what would be wrong with being in NY? I could show you places outside the city that would simply amaze you! If we ever get all the Sandy related repairs finished, I intend to try to get an east coast roundup together.

Mar. 22, 2014 5:41 pm
Grinning ear to ear!

Mar. 22, 2014 5:47 pm
BigShotsMom - I would love to go to NY. It's just that Magnolia Blossom like to look for NY addresses in Vegas. An East Coast roundup sounds awesome. The wife would love to go to NY.

Mar. 22, 2014 5:47 pm
Bibi - I'm grinning ear to ear too!

Mar. 22, 2014 5:49 pm
There's not a thing wrong with New York...unless you're trying to navigate to the Vegas strip!

Mar. 22, 2014 5:53 pm
I love Bibi's grin! Your grin is probably indigestion from all those hot peppers.

Mar. 22, 2014 6:24 pm
Magnolia Blossom - Are you saying my grins come with flames?

Mar. 23, 2014 5:01 am
When I went to my first round-up - the Buckeye Bash at Bellepepper's house, I had no idea what to expect. I was a little nervous meeting so many strangers and my husband came along. We had a plan that we would stay a short time and leave if it turned out to be not what we wanted to get involved in. Ha! We stayed for hours and met so many wonderful people! Hubby had just as much fun as I and we are both looking forward to the Buckeye Bash this year which we are hosting at our Mexican Restaurant on July 12th. This site is full of many wonderful people and I only wish I had the time and money to go to every gathering to meet everyone!

Mar. 23, 2014 5:20 am
What a great read. Made me smile. Gonna try again for a June round up here in the NJ NY area. Wish me luck.

Mar. 23, 2014 7:30 am
Mother Ann - I had no clue either, especially being the only guy but boy did we have fun. I would love to go to your restaurant.

Mar. 23, 2014 7:32 am
Joey Joan - Wishing you luck. You need to make a west coast roundup. There are a bunch of us here.

Mar. 23, 2014 7:46 am
Well you never know we may all be meeting in NY.

Mar. 23, 2014 7:50 am
Joey Joan - Could be however I voted Seattle ;)

Mar. 23, 2014 8:29 am
:)

Mar. 23, 2014 8:38 am
BD, we can just call you Hot Stuff from now on and mean it.

Mar. 23, 2014 9:31 am
Wonderful blog! This makes me long to meet some of my fellow AR peeps. Living in South Carolina, so far I've met one (who I also introduced to the program, lol.) The meetups always conflicted with work in the past - one of these days if someone will have me, I will attend one! :D

Mar. 23, 2014 9:59 am
Faith, get to Southern California and we will rally. We are really good and calling in the troops on a moments notice!

Mar. 23, 2014 10:09 am
sassyoldlady - Thank you for stopping by and the smile.

Mar. 23, 2014 10:14 am
Faith N - Baking Nana has it right just say the word and we'll be there. It doesn't take much of a notice for the So. Cal group.

Mar. 23, 2014 10:18 am
Magnolia Blossom - Dragon's breath?

Mar. 23, 2014 12:13 pm
LOL!

Mar. 23, 2014 8:57 pm
JoJo we MIGHT get to New York this summer. If we do, we have to hook up!

Mar. 24, 2014 4:09 am
Our roundups may not be tea parties - but they are hen parties where roosters are welcome to crow ;)

Mar. 24, 2014 4:12 am
. . . AND, sometimes it's a group of women, and a Popa and a Gracie-girl =D

Mar. 24, 2014 5:56 am
gammaray - I knew I could count on you for a good laugh.

Mar. 24, 2014 6:29 am
=D

Mar. 24, 2014 11:16 am
I can't believe you thought I was someone's kid! ;)

Mar. 24, 2014 12:43 pm
What can I say? I'm old and you look young.

Mar. 24, 2014 12:44 pm
I am totally digging reading all these awesome comments, and, of course agree with all the sentiments. Just wish everyone could have heard Magnolia Blossom's GPS trying to pronounce all the street names in Maui - and ask her sometime about our "scenic route" in that wonderful city!!

Mar. 24, 2014 1:15 pm
You West Coasters have bonded for sure, and it sounds as if you've had some incredible times. We try to do a spring vacation and a fall vacation. Last year there wasn't one, but the Southern Roundup is in the fall, and the last one, two years ago, conflicted with a get-together we had with three couples in Cincinnati. This fall, we've been planning a trip to the Southwest with another couple, so if the dates don't conflict, I'll be going to this year's.

Mar. 25, 2014 8:15 am
Mi - No doubt that gps was funny but just think about the memories it has given you. Will you be taking the scenic route out west some day? I would love to meet you.

Mar. 25, 2014 8:21 am
lutzflcat - We do have quite a group that can gather in an instant. I would so love to go to the southern round-up but this year we will be going to the PNW round up. I do want to plan and go to the southern round-up next year.

Mar. 25, 2014 10:20 am
You are so right bd - I have wonderful memories from all my meet ups with "our" peeps! If it weren't partly up to my boss, and mostly up to my budget, I would probably attend EVERY roundup that would have me! So, yes the west coast scenic route will remain on my radar, as I would love to meet you, as well!!

Mar. 25, 2014 2:49 pm
Mi - here's hoping that you boss is kind and your budget grows.
