Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 14, 2014
Great texture (light and fluffy) but bland. This is what I did differently from the recipe: I used 1 stick of butter plus 4 TBSP margarine I used 5 TBSP very dark homemade brown sugar (instead of molasses) I used 1 TBSP orange juice (instead of water) Perfect baking time for me was: 9 minutes The result was a great non-sticky cookie dough that was easy to roll into balls without refrigeration. The first six cookies were very light in color (not a gingerbread look at all) and rose well as they baked. The cookies were uniform, soft, and fluffy when they were done baking. However, the cookies tasted like bland sugar cookies with just a hint of spice at the end. So, working with the remaining dough, I sprinkled an additional 2 tsp of ginger powder, 1 tsp of cinnamon and drizzled about 1/2 TBSP of molasses on top. I mixed the dough with my hands (too lazy to drag out the mixer again). I baked the cookies for 9 minutes. This time, the cookies turned out darker with more spice. The texture is still slightly soft but firmer. The cookies were still lacking that full-on gingerbread taste. I will make this recipe again but I will let the dough rest in the fridge for a day, wrapped in plastic wrap, to let the spices meld.

My Mom's Raised Doughnuts

Reviewed: Jun. 17, 2013
I followed this recipe exactly. This was my first time trying this recipe and it was a waste of 3 hours and ingredients. They weren't "amazing", nor were they even "K(C)rispy K(C)reme-like" as mentioned in the comments. To me, they simply tasted like sweetened yeast. My family said,"There's no flavor." Another commenter was spot on: the glaze in this recipe was unremarkable. Use a different glaze recipe. What I did: let dough rise for 1.5 hours. The dough doubled in size properly. The dough itself was perfect and easy to work with as stated in recipe. My overall issue is the flavor, or lack thereof, of the finished product. We each ate two doughnuts, hoping it was just 'us'.

OK. I think I would prefer baked rice pudding though.

Aussie Chicken

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2002
This was a great dish! I've never really liked chicken breasts. After this recipe, I really enjoyed it. I followed a few suggestions (sautee mushrooms in bacon drippings and cut out oil). For the most part, I followed the recipe to a 't' for the sauce, however, I suggest tasting the sauce as you mix ingredients so that you end up with a sauce suited for your tastes.

Cioppino

Reviewed: Dec. 30, 2001
Absolute heaven! I scaled the recipe to 6 but now I wish I had just cooked a whole pot. The longer I let this simmer (total of 5 hours), the better it tasted. I agree with the others who suggested adding crushed pepper. Shaking in about 2 tsp. of the pepper adds a bit more zip without making things too spicy.
