Retired with time to bake and cook. I love gardening and cooking and, mostly, my family. My adult children are wonderful, my granddaughters are beautiful. I love them and my friends, too. I have a rat terrier and a cat, both of whom are demanding... Lilly, my dog, keeps me walking and staying on track to be healthy and Sammy, the cat, keeps me busy de-furing the furniture.
My favorite things to cook
Cookies, breads, low fat/calorie treats, Swiss steak, roasts, chicken dishes, soups (love soups), salads, veggie lasagna, roasted vegetables and trying new vegetables. Things that make the house smell wonderful, inviting and cozy in the winter and fresh and cool things in the summer.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Turkey dinners, pies, potato rolls, Mad Hatter salad for picnics, snickerdoodles, ginger cookies with chocolate chips, baked chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and lots of veggies, butternut squash soup. These are the things I get requests for often.
My cooking triumphs
Learning to bake bread when I was 25 or so - I had not been able to master it until a neighbor showed me how to stop trying to keep the dough too warm. Cooking 100% home grown meals. Grinding wheat and other grains and baking with them. Growing sprouts.
My cooking tragedies
Cherry pie that I forgot to put sugar in. Cooking fried rice before I'd ever tasted the dish anywhere and it was awful - just fried cooked rice with soy sauce on it - yuk.
