Ya Still Gotta Eat

My Name is Bonnie and I've always liked to cook. Lately cooking has changed for me though. Like many others my husband and I have found ourselves in a very tough financial situation. We have had to cut our grocery bill down as much as possible but 'Ya Still Gotta Eat' right?

One of the ways we cut our grocery bill was to start ordering food from Angel Food Ministries. If you've never heard of this organization they are a great resource. Through them we order pre-packaged boxes of food at highly discounted prices. This saves us a lot of money but since we don't pick out items individually we often end up with items that we don't usually eat.  As a result I've had to get much more creative with my cooking.

Allrecipies.com has been a big help to me in this process. When I have an ingredient that I don't know how to use I log on and search for recipes using that ingredient.  This gives me great recipe ideas and my family gets to try new things. It has been so wonderful to have all these recipes right at my fingers.

The other thing I do is just gather up some ingredients that I have on hand that seem to go together and see what I can make with it. This is a lot of fun!! I have to say that I think I' pretty good at it. Pasta dishes and Quiches have become my specialties. My family really likes the things I concoct. Now they make me write down what I'm putting in my dishes so I can make them again.

So even though we are really broke I have found at least one bright spot. I have a reason to play with my food. Now I thought I would share some of my experiences and my favorite recipes.

I have heard of Angelfood and have even bought it. Sometimes there were some very different things in that box but it was fun to get creative. Things will get better - and in the meantime you're having fun creating!

HI Bonnie, we've used Angel Food since Aug 2009, and it's really helped control grocery expenses. See my blog for how I use AF supplies in my monthly dinner plans. CTonabudget.blogspot.com

It's nice that you have turned a bad situation into something positive and fun as well! Keep that "glass half full" attitude, Bonnie. You sound like quite a pleasant gal!

You can do it Bonnie - think of yourself as one of the chefs on the food show "Chopped" - they get a "surprise" basket of ingredients and they are given a certain amount of time to turn these ingredients into a meal. I love watching the show and challenging myself as to what I would turn those ingredients into. I worked as a chef for a mission (soup kitchen) and everyday was a challenge. Whatever came in the back door became the ingredients for that days meals. I prayed everyday that the Lord would give me the creativity to use what He would send to make the meals needed to feed the homeless - and He always did. He watches over the sparrow and He watches over you too. Ask and ye shall receive - just ask Bonnie - He hears you.
