About this Cook
Younger than the sun and a little bit older than my teeth, I enjoy thirteen grandchildren, seven great grands, and cooking for and with all of them.
My favorite things to cook
Italian, Italian, Italian anything and everything, especially zeppole for the entire family.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I grew up loving my grandmother's kitchen: the smells, tastes, the sounds of laughter. We never sat on the plastic covered living room furniture, but always around the kitchen table learning all about loving through cooking big family meals. My favorite legacy.
My cooking triumphs
Making Aunt Mary's famous cheesecakes: she may have given the family recipe to other members but so far I am the only one who can replicate it. I claim it is because she liked me best.
My cooking tragedies
Too numerous to mention because I also love experimenting. With successes, family ask me to make it anytime; with tragedies, when asked how soon I should make it again, they tell me "no rush". Diplomatic, eh?

Gretchen's Tomato Orange Soup
Served hot or cold, this soup has some zip to it. Unable to get my hand on poblano peppers, I substituted Rotel tomatoes with chilis and lime. This combination resulted in a fantastic change-up from ordinary tomato soup.

Pumpkin Apple Streusel Muffins
Best muffins EVER ... made twelve instead of eighteen and got the biggest tastiest muffin tops ... just cook about five minutes longer due to the larger size ... and DO NOT skip the streusel topping... it's well worth it

Classic Tapioca Pudding
Yes this is the classic minute tapioca recipe but it is a good basic. In our family, we add the egg yolks with the milk mixture and whip the egg whites separately. After the mixture has cooled, we fold in the egg whites (it will look lumpy but this is how it should look). Then we fold in one can of drained crushed pineapple. Chill and serve topped with whipped cream and the optional, but favorite maraschino cherry.
