French toast was the first thing I memorized and cooked at age 5 (with help on the griddle). I watched cartoons, nature shows, and cooking shows with the Galloping Gourmet and Julia Child and who ever else was cooking. I would experiment .. and yes I ate the 'mistakes'. I learned to season using my nose.. if it smelled like I wanted it to taste.. it went in.
My favorite things to cook
Simple one dish meals. I HATE doing dishes. Regardless of what I cook .. there is ALWAYS a lot of it (I was the oldest cooking for 7 of us *4 brothers!* and now can't cook for 3 people).
My easy change it up pot pie is always good! :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
Sit and talk to me or get out of the kitchen. If you sit.. you help prep a little bit ;)
My cooking triumphs
food so good you just wanted to keep eating just to have the flavor in on your tongue .. thick sweet cornbread stuffed chops, a wonderful baked/sliced/buttered/cheesed/seasoned potato, 10hr chili, deer stroganoff (actually wrote it out!), pie day, and more.
My cooking tragedies
I feel my biggest 'tragedy' is that I can create a dish ppl love .. but that's it .. be happy you were able to be there to eat it because I generally never write it down and it's never the same dish twice. IF you liked it that much.. ask me RIGHT THEN how I made it and I'll tell you exactly what I did to make it but I won't remember it tomorrow.
