Ranch-Style Thighs

Reviewed: Jun. 17, 2012
I used crushed stove top stuffing instead of bread crumbs. Needless to say, pretty flavourful! These were a hit with my lunch crowd.

Spicy Chicken and Sweet Potato Stew

Reviewed: Apr. 28, 2012
This was unbelievably good. On second look at this recipe, I see I missed the cocoa! Something to look forward to next time! The combination of spices is perfect. I used black beans instead of kidneys, I think they're a better option here. I made mine quite thick and served it over quinoa - a perfect earthy tasting compliment to this terrific recipe. Thanks!!!

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2012
This recipe is great because it withstands quite a bit of adjusting and still pleases crowds. I made it for 6 and instead of cumin and chili powder used half a packet of taco seasoning I had left over. I also threw in 2 dried whole chili peppers during simmering and removed them to serve. The heat was perfect. I used brown sugar and a bit more beer than it called for. I look forward to it tasting even better as leftovers!

Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2011
I followed the reviewer's advice to do half white and half brown sugar, and to use 3 ripe bananas. The taste is very good, but using the recommended baking time and temperature, they burned on the bottom but were still gooey in the middle. I recommend dropping the temp to 370 and keep your eye on them at 10 minutes.

Sunday Meat Loaf

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2011
This was great. I used quinoa instead of oats. Next time I will omit the onion soup mix and season myself along with sauteed onions. I found it too salty.

Sweet Potato Rosti

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2011
These were well received at our house! Great flavour. A wonderful use of sweet potatoes without all the sugar used in most sweet potato recipes

Adel's Red Wine Steak Marinade

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2011
I did as another reviewer suggested and used the dry ingredients as a rub. I would increase the portions of the dry stuff if you are going to do it this way. I used garlic salt instead of onion salt and it was very tasty. I made the rest of the marinade as a reduction and it was overpowering.

Mindy Custer's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2011
I added the zest of one orange to these and they really complemented the vanilla and chocolate flavours. You can taste the vanilla pudding on first bite. I searched chocolate chip cookies and displayed recipes by highest rating - only after did I realize these only had one persons' rating! Fortunately, they are terrific.

Simple Savory Quinoa

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2011
This was good and I will make it again, but with less oil. I will put the vegetables in at the same time as the broth, quinoa and spices, so they aren't overcooked. I think it needs one more spice, I'm just not sure what that is. I will also use a bit more onion and a bit less lime juice next time.

Mustard Crusted Tilapia

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2011
I have tried to make fish in a number of different ways and my husband really only likes fillets coated in flour and lemon pepper and fried in butter... until now! We have a winner! I used some random Russian vodka mustard I had in the fridge from a gift basket and it was still good! I think you could use any type of mustard and this would be good! I also used crushed crackers for the top. I'll be saving this one as my new tilapia go-to recipe. Thanks!

Sweet Potato, Carrot, Apple, and Red Lentil Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2011
I made this without the chili powder or red lentils just because I had neither. I added curry. If I were to make it again I would add another apple and cut the salt if I were using regular-sodium broth. Very warming and tasty soup!

Salsa Chicken

Reviewed: Mar. 14, 2011
This is so simple and tasty. I didn't have taco seasoning and only a little chili powder so I sprinkled that on the chicken along with some cumin. Not sure you could even taste it through the salsa. I crushed some corn chips on top of the salsa and baked it. Added the cheese in the last 10 minutes and served with sliced avocado, cilantro and sour cream, with fresh peppers and polenta as sides. Delicious!

Round Steak Sauerbraten

Reviewed: Mar. 10, 2011
this was quite good. I also threw everything into the slow cooker along with the meat and sautee`d onions. I didn`t have enough brown gravy mix or onion powder so I added some onion soup mix to compensate. I also used red wine and cider vinegar, which you could really taste. I served this with smashed potatoes, but it was best as leftovers sopped up with rye bread.

truly crunchy! As close as you can get to a pub version of fish without the deep-frying!

Cheesy Quinoa Pilaf with Spinach

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2011
Yum! I amended this a bit, using frozen spinach (I'd like to try again with fresh spinach), ricotta cheese and smoked gouda. I opted for the full amount (if not more) of lemon juice and garlic. I toasted the sunflower seeds in sesame oil for an added boost to that flavour. This was a mistake in the end, as the sesame taste was too overwhelming. The ricotta made it much creamier than the original recipe appears in the photo... more like "comfort food". I'll do this again, probably with another combination!

Ginger Beef Stir-Fry

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2011
This was terrific! I used some pad thai sauce from a jar instead of plumb sauce, and did as others suggested and doubled the (plumb) sauce, cornstarch, soy sauce and garlic. A keeper!

Slightly Spicy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 12, 2011
These were alright cookies. I omitted almond extract and cloves because I didn't have them, and increased the nutmeg and cinnamon by half. I also added 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper as suggested by another reviewer. I didn't find them flat at all, and 10 minutes was perfect baking time. Next time I would increase all the spices by another half, and keep the cayenne.

Spiced Pears and Pomegranate

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2010
I sauteed the pears with the spices and sugar and butter, and served them and the fresh pomegranate seeds over ice cream for a more "winter" dessert. Very good.
