Grandma Orcutt's Date Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2005
we really didn't like these. they had a weird sandy sort of texture and just didn't appeal to us. it was too bad, too, because we normally like dates.

Pineapple Upside-Down Cake IV

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2003
Mine turned out sort of dry and sort of weird looking. My sugar burned a little, too. I used fresh pineapple instead of canned, which might have been my mistake. However, the cat got into the cake and thought it was delicious. Since cake isn't good for cats, though, I probably won't make it again.

Downeast Maine Pumpkin Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2002
A hit with my boyfriend and his friends! Our cat liked, it too! I thought it was a little bland, but that may be because I only used 1 tsp. salt instead of the 1 1/2 tsp. I used someone else's suggestion of cutting the oil to 1/2 c and using 1/2 cup applesauce, and that seemed to work well. I also only used 2 c. sugar, but that could be cut down, too, if the applesauce is sweet. I added raisins, which was nice. I made it in a cake pan because I only have 1 loaf pan, and it made a nice, big, dense, moist loaf. I'll probably make it again, but tweak the spices a little bit to give it more flavor.

Homemade Barbecue Sauce

Reviewed: Jul. 2, 2002
This was pretty good barbecue sauce recipe. I normally like it a little sweeter and a little spicier. I made 1 batch with the recipe as described, but found it sort of bland. So I made another, but this time I sauteed the onion with some chili powder in the melted butter, added a tablespoon of brown sugar, replaced the celery seed and green pepper with a stalk of celery, and swapped the lemon juice for lime juice. That was just the kick it needed! The second way only took about 5 minutes more. The basic sauce is definitely worth a try, and lends itself well to some creativity!

Lime Spareribs

Reviewed: May 3, 2002
This was really good! We used beef ribs instead of pork and it turned out just fine. The lime gives a great flavor. It was a little sour for me, so I think I'm going to experiment in the future with adding brown sugar, more honey, or maple syrup! (if we had kids i'm sure they'd like it)

Erica's Delicious Slow Cooker Beef Roast

Reviewed: Apr. 30, 2002
This is good! We let it cook for 9 hours and the end result was great. The meat was ok - we used london broil and it never really got tender. BUT the star of the show was the carrots. We all fought over who would get the last carrot! The gravy was yummy and plentiful. We'll be making this one again!

Apple Pork Chops

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2002
We really liked this variation on pork chops. We scaled the recipe for 2 people, but found that the cooking time was a little too long. We'll definitely make this again, but check it earlier for doneness!

Potato Latkes I

Reviewed: Feb. 9, 2002
These were yummy! We found them a little bit eggy, so next time we'll use only 1 egg. We were "grate"-ful to find this recipe!

Roasted Potato Medley

Reviewed: Feb. 9, 2002
Good spuds! Very easy. I found the vinegar a little strong, so I'll use less next time. Only used russets, and got good results. A hit at my dinner table.

This was easy to make. We loaded it up with vermont cheddar and put it over macaroni on a cold night - spectacular!

New York Cheesecake I

Reviewed: Feb. 9, 2002
I LOVED this cheesecake! My friends made comments like "best ever." I used cinnamon graham crackers and cinnamon in the crust - a great result. I had to bake it about 10 minutes longer than specified because it was kind of soft. Topped with fresh strawberries, mangoes and blueberries - an instant hit!
