I grew up watching my mother cook and bake in Lewisporte, Newfoundland. She made everything from scratch - including bread, yoghurt and granola. And she did this without having a lot of money. She would stretch each meal and still made it delicious every time. She instilled in me a belief that good food did not have to be unhealthy (although, some definitely is) and that you did not have to follow recipes exactly (if you don't have an ingredient, substitue it for something else).
My favorite things to cook
My husband's favorite thing for me to make is pie. Any kind of pie...apple pie, pumpkin pie, cheesecake pie and of course meat pies. And because of that, it's my favorite thing to make.
My favorite family cooking traditions
One of our family cooking traditions is tourtiere (a meat pie made from ground pork). This is a French Canadian dish that is served on Christmas Eve. My mother stole this tradition because she didn't like the Newfoundland traditional dish (salt fish).
