About this Cook
mid 50s retired guy. learning to enjoy the pleasures of cooking local, fresh, seasonal foods. need to learn more about braising meats, cooking with dried foods (beans, fruits), and some decent vegetarian food.
My favorite things to cook
love to bake. but i just like to cook. so, most anything that appeals to me, is what i will get involved with. i'm not afraid to try most anything.
My favorite family cooking traditions
my maternal grandparents were german bakers by trade and at christmas time, they would make literally hundreds of stollens for anybody that crossed their path. i've been serching for a recipe that was close to theirs for years.
My cooking triumphs
my newest is gerry meyer's recipe for cranberry/pistachio biscotti. another is a very easy, low cal lasagna that tastes better than most high fat versions.
My cooking tragedies
pie crust pie crust pie crust ARGH!!!!!!

Cranberry Pistachio Biscotti
this is the easiest and fastest way to make an impression for a brunch, a dinner party, a gift, or just to have around. i have a small galley kitchen and i can get a batch made in an hour. i dont use the almond extract, but it is just because i dont have any and never remember to buy it. i bet they are slightly better with it but, i dont miss it . the colors are great at holiday time. i send them off to italy and they are loved over there too - especially because they dont have cranberries in italy.
