Devil's Food Sheet Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2010
I made this recipe just as stated although I did add two squares of semi-sweet baking chocolate as well as an extra tbsp of Cocoa powder as suggested for a more chocolate tasting cake. The cake itself smelled divine and was wonderful. I couldn't have asked for a moister and more chocolatey tasting cake. The frosting however was too sweet and nearly ruined a wonderful cake. I also didn't like the fact that it hardens quickly and makes touching up difficult. My advice make the cake without the frosting or use a different frosting for your cake and you'll certainly be pleased.

Smoked Sausage and Red Beans

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2010
This recipe was ok. I made it according to the directions adding the rice into the crock pot. I read the reviews prior to making this and wasn't sure whether to do this or not. I would not recommend doing this, make the rice and top with the sausage and beans prior to serving. I did add a can of southwestern style diced tomatoes and green chilies as a couple of people made this suggestion and I think it gave the kick my family likes. I also used Sriracha hot chili sauce instead of hot pepper sauce. I cooked according to the directions and when the meal was done I found it runny and the rice creamy not fluffy like in the picture. Overall the taste was good after extra salt and pepper was added (and extra hot sauce for my guys). I will try this recipe again cooking the rice on the side to see if it's better, if not I think I will look for a different recipe. Sorry it's just ok to us made as is...

Beef Bulgogi

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2010
The whole family loved it! I took the suggestions offered and substituted the white sugar for brown sugar and added some red pepper flakes for spice. I will certainly make this again.

Hot and Sour Shrimp Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2010
First off this is not hot and sour soup, it's Thai in origin. My guys thought it was ok but it lacked a bitterness that they were looking for maybe some vinegar would have helped and they didn't like the noodles in the soup. I took the advice of others and substituted pineapple juice for sugar and added fish sauce but it was still not up to par. The soup has an ok base and with alot of tweaking could make a decent Thai soup but I think I will look for another recipe.

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 9, 2010
Just made these and they are great. The cookie is soft and moist with a nice flavor. I had to use water as I didn't have any OJ but next time I make these I will give that a try. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERBAKE!! I was tempted to leave my cookies in longer than 9 minutes but made myself pull them out and I am glad. Although the cookies may not seem done at first they quickly set while cooling. Another important tip make the balls small!! I rolled out about 1 inch balls and the cookies turned out huge. I have another batch in the oven now and these I made smaller (don't forget to press down otherwise they turn out fluffy). I also took the advice of another reviewer and dropped the dough into a bowl with the extra sugar rolled it around in there and it made rolling the balls nice and easy with little mess. Lastly I am curious if the flavor would be better with a dark brown sugar or even light brown sugar rather than white, gonna have to try that too. Thanks :)

My Country Style Steak

Reviewed: Dec. 9, 2010
Nice down home recipe. I made this recipe exactly as stated except for I had an onion dip mix packet so I used that and added extra pepper. I was worried because there was little to no juice in the pan (even though I cooked the meat on medium) so I added a tbsp of water when I added the flour and onion mixture. This created no problem. The meat turned out tender and the gravy was tasty. I look forward to making this again.

Beth's Spicy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2010
The cookies were a disappointment. I chose this recipe because of the high reviews it had but should have went with another. The cookies were not sweet enough, were on the crumbly side and the cloves ruined the taste. I did find that the longer the cookie sat the better it tastes but I don't know that any amount of time can save these cookies. My advise if you're gonna make these leave out the cloves and let em sit for a day.

So easy to make and so good. I added some garlic powder to the batter as suggested by another reviewer and then brushed some melted garlic butter on top and they were great!

Prego® Now and Later Baked Ziti

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2010
Loved the simplicity of this recipe, I used it as a base and then added my own mixture of spices. I added extra cheese and used a mixed blend of cheese for optimal flavor. I will certainly make this again most likely a spicy version using Italian sausage and extra spices for zest.

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2010
Great starting point for a potato soup. I made it as directed and really like it. I think with a little tweaking I can make it more to my liking and look forward to making this again most likely with some bacon and cheese for a garnish.

Tasty Meat Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2010
Made this tonight. I had 1.5 lbs of meat so I added an extra can of vegetable beef soup as well as some garlic to the recipe. I also added only one potato to the mixture because the soup had potatoes in it. I made the pie with a top crust and liked it but my guys only thought it was ok. Unsure if I will make this again.

White Bean 'n' Ham Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2010
How in the world can this make 6 servings? I followed the recipe as it was laid out and it only made 3 servings for my family. The soup was ok but I felt it had too much carrot. If you make this recipe I suggest you double it if you expect 6 servings.

Sopapilla Cheesecake

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2010
Dear god I can feel my arteries clogging as I type!! I made this tonight and it really is great. I followed the recipe exactly as it is written. The dessert tastes and smells delightful but oh man is it sweet. Next time I make it I will half the butter and sugar for the topping and follow the recommendations of others and mix it together to make a glaze then pour on top. This is a keeper just needs to be a little less sweet for us.

Flat Iron Steak with Balsamic Reduction

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2010
I will certainly make this again. I made this per the recipe but I recommend brushing the steak with olive oil and coating with peppercorns and salt then let it sit in the fridge for an hour or more prior to cooking. I have made several pepper steaks and I find that letting them "marinate" for some time helps. The balsamic vinegar sure smelled potent during and directly after cooking but it tasted just fine on the steak. Thanks

Raspberry Ribbons

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2010
Made these cookies tonight and they have a great taste to them. The cookies were hard to move around without breaking so I would recommend making them into thumbprint cookies instead of ribbons. I chose not to make the icing and am glad I didn't, I think the glaze would have been overkill. Overall the recipe is a great base but not very practical as is. With a little customizing I will certainly keep it and make again. Thanks :)

Mrs. Sigg's Snickerdoodles

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2010
Loved this cookie. I am a huge fan of Snickerdoodles and was excited to make this cookie. I made the cookie per the recipe and my cookies didn't turn out flat but I felt they did need more sugar and cinnamon topping. I would recommend as others have doubling the cinnamon and sugar topping. Overall great recipe.

Oatmeal Chip Cookies

Not too happy with my cookies sorry. The cookies turned out crumbly with a grainy type texture rather than soft and chewy. I think I'll look for another recipe.

Coconut Macaroons III

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2010
This is a great recipe, nice and basic. You have to use parchment paper, otherwise these will stick to everything! I made two batches, one with 1 tsp vanilla and 1 tsp almond extract, the almond stood out too much. The second batch I used 1 tsp vanilla and 1 tsp coconut which was great, a nice smooth coconut taste with nothing to take away or add to the flavor. I suggest that you use more coconut. The taste was great but the ratio of wet to dry is a little off, so I suggest you add a little more coconut to make them nice and full.

Simple Baked Apples

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2010
I made these with our Christmas dinner. I made them accordingly but ommitted the raisins and walnuts. I added a few bits of butter and brown sugar on top as suggested by another reviewer. The apples turned out well enough but could have standed even a little more sugar. I found they tasted better the longer they sat. Also the recipe does not make 12 servings but more along the lines of 6-8. I'll make again with some modifications.
