I've made this recipe several times. My husband is Puerto Rican, so I'm always looking for Hispanic recipes, especially ones with black beans. The first couple of times I made it, it was good, but I felt as if it were missing some flavor - not spice - just flavor. At first I was just adding flavor by using the Bush's Seasoned black beans, which are great to use with all 4 cans that are called for. I still felt like it needed a little more flavor, so I add 2 mini packets of Sazon Goya (Coriander & Annatto) (bright orange & pink box) seasoning and it's wonderful! Just what it needed. I love this recipe and I do thank the publisher for a wonderful gift. My kids love this too. The recipe as written makes quit a bit, so I usually end up freezing about 1/3 of the soup. It freezes well.
