Life is Butter Spent with Family

In our home, butter is a staple ingredient. Butter is extremely versatile and has a sublime flavor no other ingredient can match. You can brown butter for a nutty flavor, clarify butter for high temperature cooking, make compound butter to enhance a dish,
bring it to room temperature to make it spreadable, or simply melt it for dips or use it as a topping. My favorite thing about butter is how it makes everything taste better. I once read in a baby food making book to add a pat of butter if your child doesn't
like the food you want them to eat. If that is always true is up to debate but it certainly got my girls eating their vegetables!
How did I find such an endless love for butter? I bet you could guess and get it right on the first try! If you thought I would answer that my Grandma was the reason I fell head-over-heels in love with butter, you guessed right! My Grandmother was an incredible,
no wait, phenomenal cook and she taught me the possibilities butter holds. As a small girl, I remember my Grandma get out the step-stool so I could help her cook. She would have a softened stick of butter, flour in a mixing bowl, a cup of oatmeal, a cup of
chocolate chips, a cup of milk, and eggs waiting for me on the counter. My grandmother held a fork and instructed me in what order to add the ingredients and I would listen patiently even though I was so excited I thought my heart would surely beat out of
my chest. I would sneak a spoon out of the utensil drawer and eat as much of the batter as I could before my grandmother would catch me. I realize now that she saw me sneaking spoonfuls the whole time but only pretended to catch me when she was done cleaning
just so I would laugh. The aroma in the air and the feeling I would get when our oatmeal chocolate chip cookies came out of the oven was just heavenly.
Now that I have my own family, I have carried on the butter tradition. I swear by butter and know there is no substitute. One day I hope my children will share how I always had two bar-stools for them to pull up to the counter when I was cooking. How I layed
out a mixing bowl with a softened stick of butter and patiently measured out the ingredients with them. That I would clean up the mess as they sneak the batter coated beaters and then snicker as I caught them sneaking the cookie dough. Most of all, the appreciation
of making their favorite cookie at home with someone who loves them dearly.
To see butter go into meal after meal and create something new every time is magical. I see butter as a glue that binds unique flavors into one and makes your mouth water for more. As I said earlier, butter is a staple in our home and the memories that come
from every stick make butter a lasting staple in our family kitchens.
What is your favorite thing about butter?
