I'm an ethnic chinese Singaporean. Working on my nutrition Masters from the US while living in Beijing with my American husband. After living in Asia for 10 years, he has acquired a pretty varied taste for foods here and proberbly eats even spicier foods than I do! He enjoys my cooking and we often have friends over for an indulgent social meal.
We exercise quite intensively 6 days a week and are very careful about what we eat.
I use Allrecipes to find meal ideas and often adapt them to suit our nutritional needs.
My favorite things to cook
Cantonese, Singaporean influenced foods, South East Asian flavours. Often like to experiment with ingredients found in this city. Often happy to bring something very freash back from the open air markets, then figure out what to do with them. Meals are often simple and uses a lot of herbs and spices to add interest and depth.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Cantonese style clear soups.
Nonya (Straits Chinese) because I love the cultural mix of Malay with Chinese cuisine and the later incorporation of Indian, Thai and Portuguese flavours.
My cooking triumphs
Cassoulet that took 3 days to prep.
Ayam Buah Keluak (Chicken stew using buah keluak nuts) made from scratch by cracking my own nuts with hammer and screwdriver.... nearly took off some fingers in the process ;)
My cooking tragedies
Candy that burned :-(
Burning my demi-glace when I checked email for too long.
