Every year my boss brings a ton of apples from his apple tree at home to work. I take the left over apples and bake this pie every year for him. I have come to call it "job security pie". So far it has worked :) The apples I have used to date are Gala, Granny Smith and Red Delicious. They all seem to work. The only thing I would change (as mentioned by previous reviewers) Mix the apples with the prepared liquid mixture before placing into the bottom crust. Once you apply the top crust, brush it with leftover liquid mixture. This is a much easier way to do it, although the original method is kind of fun if you have the patience :)

I used Betty Crocker Chocolate Fudge cake mix and Coca Cola. The cake came out moist and almost fudge-like. This was a HUGE hit with my entire family. My husband wants this cake every year for his birthday. I used the Rich Chocolate Frosting recipe for the icing. I noticed that the hint of cola flavour wasn't as noticeable after a day or so.
