Rhubarb Custard Pie I

Reviewed: Sep. 10, 2010
I'm giving this 4 stars just because it's not what I was looking for. It didn't turn out "custardly"...if that makes any sense. It is delicious and the texture was great. My daughter loved it and my wife conceded that it was pretty good considering that rhubarb is supposed to be cattle food. I'm still trying to find my Grandma Fox's recipe.

We had a Greek themed dinner party tonight. I made this recipe last night and I thought it was a total train wreck. I was upset at the way it looked and when I spooned the sauce over it I was thinking, ""I'm not going to serve this. There is no way this is going to work." Boy was I wrong. This stuff rocks! It's incredible and something that I would expect to receive at a good Greek bakery. The guests said that it was better than any baklava that they had had. I added a touch of nutmeg to the nuts and used pecans and toasted them. I melted the butter and used a pastry brush to apply it. My actual baking time was closer to 35 was starting to get too brown. The review by Sandra Lee gives excellent tips to make the process easier...I wish I had read it BEFORE I baked it. If you are not familiar with phyllo, there is a slight learning curve, but after you get past that this is easy and delicious. My wife wants me to make it for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. So far the best recipe I've found here...and I've found some really good ones!

Ojai Roast Turkey with Rosemary, Lemon, and Garlic

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2005
The best turkey I've ever made. The bird is moist and the flavors get through to all the meat in a wonderfully subtle way. For years I tried to get my family to switch to ham for Thanksgiving because turkey is so blah. Year after year they keep insisting that I cook up a bird, so each year I would try a different recipe. I finally tried this recipe...superb!!!

Mussels Mariniere

Reviewed: Oct. 23, 2005
This recipe seems to be the basic recipe when you go out to eat. This is the recipe that makes you want to try mussels at home. 100% success! This is an awesome jumping off point to customize your very own "family" recipe. Next time I try this I will change a few things...but only to suit it to my own twisted tastes.
