Buckeye Gathering

I had such a wonderful time!  It was very special for me to meet a few of the buzzers and many husbands as well (who my husband tells me were sitting in a group trying to figure out exactly what we all do on All Recipes, like Duh?).  I was really shocked to enter the backyard and see Cindy Lepp and Maggi because it was kept from me that they were coming!   The food was all fabulous and enjoyed in the beautiful yard.  Even the weather cooperated!  Larry in the orange shirt is a friend of Saveur's, probably because he likes the food benefits!!! and is great fun.

Thank you so much for hosting Saveur, it was worth every mile to attend!  Thank you also to Lady Sparkle for sending us all beautiful handmade dishcloths,  Trishie for sending sweets and Irish fridge magnets, Maggie & Cindy for the cheese kit, Bellepepper for the caramel corn, Saveur for Ohio State t-shirts for both Peter & I, Sassy for the Baked Pear Candle & Mominator for the CIGARS!!! (gosh I hope I am getting these right!)  I was a total dork and didn't take gifts!!  Now I have done AR gatherings 101, I will be better prepared next time!  I also just have to say how incredibly beautiful Saveur's home is, built in 1934 and chock full of character and warmth ~ the taste in decor is out of this world!

Some pictures have been transferred to Picassa, if you click on slideshow, they will come up enlarged and a little easier to see some funny details. .... https://picasaweb.google.com/gaijincymro/Columbus611<

Looking at the last picture. YOu have Jim, who belongs to Bellepepper sitting below him in black. Myself and my hubby Peter in green, on the couch is Mickdee, Cindy & Sassy. Behind the couch is Marcella, her hubby and SWChef and Sassy's hubby. Maggie in the chair and standing behine her from left is Sassy & SwChef's hubby, & Saveur's hubby. Just realized Saveur is not in that one, she is in the previous one sitting in front of her hubby.

Great blog, Carrie! I pics looks wonderful. A great time was had by all. All of the food, gifts, tremendous, but the company and conversation were the BEST!. Special thanks to Lady Sparkle and Trishie for their thoughtful gifts, Mominator ("Momi") for the crazy stoggies, how we wish you could be there with us in body but you were in spirit. And the hubbies...what can I say...a gorgeous group of fun-loving guys. And my girls, Carrie, Mickdee, Bellepepper, Sassy, Cindy, Maggi, Marcella, SWChef, you rock, ladies! Special shout out to Sassy, who really made it happen! If you ever have a chance to go to an AR gathering, do it! Oh, and when is Euro AR gathering? Better update my passport! :)

Jun. 12, 2011 6:39 am
You all look like your having a BLAST! And Cindy surprised you all, that was cool! Fair play to all the Hubby's letting themselves in for the total unexpected! I suppose the draw of good food was enough to lure them in!!
Jun. 12, 2011 6:40 am
What a wonderful time we all had!! A special thanks to you, Savvy, for hosting in your lovely home! And thanks to Sassy for getting the word out and keeping us organized! We were all having such a great time, Savvy probably thought we'd stay on through dinner!!! LOL! And I couldn't have been more surprised and pleased when Cindy and Maggi showed up after all! So, so, so much fun!! Now, I'm wondering when we can do it again??!!

Looks like a blast. What a beautiful home and the food looks terrific too. Cheers to you all!
Jun. 12, 2011 12:15 pm
The food was fabulous! Flank steak that had been marinated for 2 days with horseradish sauce (less we forget the horseradish sauce!) Orzo salad that has made hubby & I both converts and Bellepepper has promised to enter her recipe for! Fruit salad, green salad, banana pudding and the biggest chocolate cake I have ever seen and I was craving last night at 10:00pm. I did a salmon spread and curry toast. Sassy wanted to eat sweets before savory buy Savy held her off with a bat!

Big Shots, it was nice to have the guys! They might tell their friends where they were this weekend but I think they really enjoyed it. I can tell Peter has a new appreciation for my AR life:)
Jun. 12, 2011 6:03 pm
Thank you Belle, saved and reviewed! For others FYI, this salad is FAB!!!
Jun. 13, 2011 5:50 pm
Sounds like a great time. Carrie, how long of a drive was it? So glad you were able to go. Wished I could have gone too, but long drive and hard to get time off right now.
Jun. 18, 2011 12:21 pm
I went to Michigan on the way to see a girlfriend, so that was 5 hours. Driving to Cleveland took me about 6.5 hours, but it should have taken 4.5 (I got lost) Then the return trip to Columbus on Saturday was a bit less than 5 hours and my drive home was 5 hours. Was worth it though!!!
Jun. 18, 2011 7:40 pm
Oh my, I have been MIA for a week! It was so wonderful to meet all of you. I wish the rest of you could have beamed yourselves up! Saveur and her husband were so gracious in hosting all us crazy strangers! It was wonderful to meet everyone. The gifts were all so thoughtful and I will follow up with all of you soon! Thank you Carrie for posting all of this! It was very special to meet such amazing women! It was a long drive but worth it. I encourage anyone in the future to make the effort, there are beautiful people on this site. Thank you, thank you!

About Me
I am currently working as a Social Worker at a men's Emergency Shelter. Prior to this, we spent 15 years living overseas in support of my husband's career. We have lived in Pakistan, Tokyo Japan and Shanghai China as well as a short stay in the USA. We have 5 grown children and 5 beautiful, fun grandchildren.
My favorite things to cook
I guess I like to cook main dishes the most and play with things to try to make them better. Problem is, when I get something really great, I can never remember the next time what I had done! I go on baking kicks until we all gain so much weight, I have to stop!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I'm a bit of control freak, so I like to host rather than be hosted. Often to my detrement, as I get exhausted with pretty bad arthritis. Many of our funniest family stories might include a tale of "Mom was so tired by that point, she burst into tears"! One of those times was with our family tradition of shrimp cocktail as an appetizer to Christmas dinner ~ in error I had bought the super hot seafood sauce and my five little kids couldn't even eat it. Hubby rescued the day, by rinsing their shrimp and making some mild seafood sauce with ketchup and horseradish.
My cooking triumphs
An emergency camping meal. We got to the campsite to find a major storm starting and had to cook fast & furious to get warmed up. As we then planned on leaving early in the morning, I threw sausage, pork, beef and all kinds of veggies into a pot. My husband recently brought that up when we were discussing the show "The best thing I ever ate" Of course, I have never been able to duplicate it :)
My cooking tragedies
November 7/10 Made a leg of lamb roast for dinner. Used some different seasonings in the rub this time, so I thought that was the funny smell. My roast potatoes came out gorgeous, peas & carrots perfect and the grvy a beautiful rich color. We sit down as the minute I take a bite, I know ~ the meat is bad. Dh and Ds carried on for a few minutes until they got nervous too. I spat my first bite out, but had some of the gravy, so I could get a bit sick. But dh and ds are sitting here looking at each other, wondering who will puke first. Thank goodness I just found out where the hospital is in our new hometown! On the bright side, at least didn't have company :)
