Danny's Song

Hi Everyone, I think the majority of us have felt like we need some direction from the Lepp family about what we would like to do. I was in a facebook conversation last week that a relative on the Lepps was also in and I took a chance on sending her a private email asking her advice. She has replied today with Cindy & Danny's wishes. I will go ahead and call this lady in ND Parks tomorrow to get further details. I think from there, we can go ahead and set up a fund? Look for an update by tomorrow (Thursday, end of business hours) With their wishes clear, I feel a bit better about doing something now rather than waiting for more news ~ that was bothering me quite a bit:) The best option I have found so far is Wishing Well.com ~ if there are other suggestions, please let them be known A.S.A.P. Note, Cindy's mailing address is only available on her blog via her Caring Bridge link now if you would like to send a card privately. Cheers, Carrie (Below is a copy of our conversation with identifying names removed for privacy) **Cindy is now aware of this via the relative asking their wishes. I also still have the other blog with your emails, suggestions and advice that we will continue to refer to.
My proposal is: I find out what the Parks in ND has available to us including cost, etc. Lady Sparkle is also working on putting the "Marathon of Love" thread into a book format including all the recipes (something Cindy can treasure for many years to come) Obviously, that could cost a bit of $$$, due to ink, paper, etc. I would suggest we do something with park, pay the cost for the book and any remainder would go to Cindy for unforseen costs that she is likely to encounter over the coming few months. Please share ideas!!!
Here is the link to LadySparkles blog about the book, please check it out: http://allrecipes.com/Cook/11019003/BlogEntry.aspx?postid=228624<

I am one of dozens of friends of Cindy's on All Recipes and also a facebook friend of hers. I noticed you comment the other day on Cindy's post and assume you are a relative and are helping Cindy out right now.

Our hearts are breaking for Cindy & Danny and prayers and wishes for peace are with them and all of you there supporting them.

We are attempting to collect donations from our group with the thought of arranging a tree planting or a perhaps a park bench if affordable. I am hoping to start contacting Parks Departments and City's to enquire what is available. Is Benton the best location to arrange something or would a different location be better? I would appreciate any hints you could give us to make this as fitting as possible.

We are all thinking of you and sending strength your way.

Thank you, Carrie Davies

lass="x_x_x_x_x_GBThreadMessageRow_Body_Content">Corinne, Thank you ever so much for your reply. We have been thinking about Cindy & Danny @ All Recipes non-stop and many prayers are being sent for peace and comfort. We were actually 'virtually' camped out in their backyard for over 48 hours on what is being called a "Marathon of Love". Cindy will be able to find the link to that on her blog when she has the time and needs some friends with her. We appreciate your suggestion very much! I think we are all feeling like we are wanting some direction in this from Cindy before moving forward.

I hope things are going as well as can be expected at the house and truly hope Danny is comfortable and Cindy is getting some rest.

Thanks again, Carrie

***UPDATE: I have just spoken with the lady from the Park Board in Ashley, North Dakota. I think we have really found something great here!!! So the park is called Centennial Park and is on the grounds of the original school that is now gone. If Danny went to grades 1~6 there he would have gone to that school. The lady doesn't know for sure if Danny went to that school, but she knows his brothers did. His one brother still lives just a 1/2 block from the park! The Lepp family is very well known in town and their hearts are all with the family as well. Centennial Park has a playground, a few benches, a basketball court and picnic tables. She tells me lots of families gather there in the nice weather for picnics. They can supply us a bench, but she is quite certain they can only supply concrete (she is double checking that and checking costs) We can order our own bench if we like and it could be another material (wood or metal), but it has to have to have the capability of being cemented into the ground to avoid vandalism or theft. I will be sending SWChef another email asking for some pictures, prices and availability to ND from her connection for benches. We can also donate a tree and she says they generally run $75~$80 from the nursery closest to them. The only tree that flowers nicely in their climate is a 'flowering crab', but apparently they are high maintenance due to the mess they make and the park doesn't like them. She suggests a 'red maple' as they do about the best there.
Now, for the fundraising: I am having trouble coming up with too many options as a 'vessel' to collect the funds. I would like to propose we use the Wishing Well for people to donate to a cash account for us to pay for the tree, bench and plaque. Any excess funds would be payable directly to Cindy to do as she wishes; I assume she will have many medical costs or she may have another memorial she would like to donate to in Danny's name. My understanding is that we could then donate by credit card. (I have not yet played with the site to check everything out, but I will do that)
I would like to propose that we go ahead with the tree and bench (both marked with plaques ~ the tree they do a brick plaque) and continue to support the efforts of having the "Marathon of Love" book complied and bound. Lady Sparkle is heading that project but it is not without cost Winking smile I am also proposing that we look further into the details of Wish Well as a means to collect funds. I propose we collect funds for one month to allow people to budget what they can afford. While it will be known who donates, I suggest we keep individual donation private, but report a final balance to everyone. As soon as enough money is raised we can move forward on the tree and bench. If anyone objects to any of these proposals, now would be the time to say so please.

My brother and sil sell park benches as well as tables and trash cans, etc. Perhaps we could get a deal from them. Let me know if yofu want more information - but anything you want to do works for me. Count on me for a donation.

SWChef, If we can/need to buy our own and do a the ND park, that is a great lead! Thanks!!

Thank you for doing this Carrie. My heart goes out to Cindy & Danny. I will be glad to donate. I have contacted LadySparkle and a donation toward the book / Cindy is on the way.
Mar. 23, 2011 6:43 pm
Carrie - when you talk to the folks at the Park Service ask them about SWChef's suggestion. Sound just perfect for what we are looking for. Personally - I would like to see any monies in excess of the memorial and book go directly to Cindy. I know that LS has said that any donations in excess of the cost of the book will be forwarded to Cindy. I have every confidence that LS will follow through with this.
Mar. 23, 2011 7:04 pm
Thanks for the vote Nana. I will ask them up front if we can supply the bench. We may need a picture of it for their approval but I just had a email from SWChef and she says they are top quality. If her Brother can ship to ND, it would be great!
Mar. 23, 2011 7:19 pm
Where is the "Like" button? :)
Mar. 24, 2011 3:30 am
I'm willing to make any donations towards these endeavors for Cindy. Please keep us informed. Your enthusiasm with this project is certainly appreciated. Love to Cindy and Danny.

Great job Carrie! I am truly amazed by this group of awesome people, being there for our "virtual" friends. I'd be hard pressed to find such a great group in the "non-virtual" world! I will email ladysparkle to send some $$ as well.
Mar. 24, 2011 11:00 am
Good news Carrie! Hopefully the wishing well donation will be an easy (or fairly easy!) task to set up. Again, thank you for doing this. It is progressing nicely. Look forward to more info as it comes in.

Sound excellent Carrie! You are doing such a wonderful job. I am SO grateful to you for steeping up to the plate and taking this on. I never considered the hang-ups that could come up when collecting money and I never would have had enough free time on my hands to tackle this these past couple of weeks. You are amazing and I appreciate you dearly!

Mar. 24, 2011 3:59 pm
Carrie, well done and thank you for sending folks to my blog. We are an "All Hands on Deck" family, very heartwarming. I wonder if the Park would consider an American Redbud tree? They are not messy, bloom in the spring and have heart shaped leaves. The Arbor Day Foundation says they are hardy to zone 9. It is just a suggestion. Red maples are lovely as well. :)
Mar. 24, 2011 5:27 pm
I have been busy lately and I am out of the loop. Please forgive me for asking, but did something awful happen? I can't piece it together from only the blog post above.
Mar. 24, 2011 5:28 pm
I would like to donate once its all figured out. I think this is such a kind thing to do for the Lepps. Please keep us updated on how to donate. Thanks ladies for all your hard work!

I have a Ornamental Crabapple Tree and it flowers beautifully every spring with no crab apples dropping. It just flowers BUT I live in Minnesota and not sure if they have them there or if they grow well - Just a thought - You are wonderful for doing this for Cindy and Danny !!!!

Thanks people!! I will make a note of these tree suggestions and ask the Parks board about them! SWChef has asked his contact to send me some information and quotes on the benches, so that is moving forward also.

Mar. 26, 2011 10:12 am
Thanks everyone ~ I'm keeping a list of these trees to ask the park board about
Mar. 27, 2011 8:40 am
I've been thinking of Cindy and her family since I read the initial post. I would also be happy to be a part of this support. It's wonderful to come together here on AR and actively show our friendship. I know of another family who were quite moved by a tree planting and park bench dedicated to their loved one. There was also a set of three stepping stones bearing the thoughts of the younger family members which helped to include them. I really look forward to more information and will keep a close eye on this blog.
Mar. 27, 2011 7:14 pm
Cynjne, Thank you for your comments, very encouraging that we are making the right choice :)
Mar. 27, 2011 7:39 pm
Carrie, where can I send my donation for the bench/tree? I am sorry if it posted above- I didn't read all the comments. THANKS!!
Mar. 28, 2011 7:24 am
Hi, actually trying to get some more information on that today. Lots of issues to think about with it. Like who's name do we put it in to be able to pay for bench & tree and then how we would send any remaining monies to Cindy. I have sent some emails out with questions to a website called Our Wishing Well. Hopefully will have something set up by tomorrow?
Mar. 28, 2011 7:28 am
I have looked online at the Ash tree and Ornamental Crabapple tree. the ash tree looks great and it looks like it would grow in North Dakota. The Ornamental Crabapple is really pretty but I notice when I google it, it comes up with the Flowering Crab that the Parks. Dept said they won't have. I have also looked at pictures via google of the Red Maple which was recommended by Parks as one of the hardiest growers in their area and they are beautiful too. I have sent on those question to the Parks Dept this morning for their comment.
Mar. 28, 2011 8:45 am
I think I may know why the Parks Dept lady is recommending a Red Maple for our tree. I found the park on google and went for a little tour. Pretty blurry, but a nice little, simple park in the neighborhood type feel to it. |All the trees I can see are green, so a Red Maple might stand out more as something special in the park.
Mar. 28, 2011 9:22 am
Thanks for the update, Carrie.
Mar. 28, 2011 10:23 am
Hi Carrie. You might want to be careful about an ash tree. Depending on the type of ash and the area of the country, emerald ash borers are killing a lot of the ash trees.
Mar. 28, 2011 10:24 am
P.S. I believe red maples are very hardy, plus they are beautiful trees.
Mar. 28, 2011 10:47 am
I think my personal feeling is we might be wise with what is being recommended by the Parks Dept as a good tree for there ~ I know they know more than I do! And I agree, very pretty, nice shade and I like the idea of it always re-generating with new leaves/fresh hope/new life every year
Mar. 28, 2011 12:21 pm
You do what you feel is best, Carrie. We will trust your judgement! Thanks again for doing this! ♥
Mar. 28, 2011 7:23 pm
I have just joined this blog after reading about Danny. While I do not know what caused his illness it sounds like cancer. I just lost my brother on February 5, 2011 to cancer and it was indeed a very sad and hopeless journey. It makes us realize just how fleeting life is and how reaching out to our fellow human beings to let them know we share their pain at this time is what humanity is all about. My prayers and thoughts go out to you Cindy and Danny. I have enjoyed your blog as well. Hope to share some more in the future.
Mar. 28, 2011 9:39 pm
Thanks for doing all this! Let us knwo when and where to send a donation to - you can count me in.
Mar. 29, 2011 12:35 am
Maple Trees are very hardy and they are beautiful - I have two, one turns yellowish orange in the fall and the other orangish red.
Mar. 29, 2011 6:10 am
Bridget325, I am very sorry to hear about your brother. Yes Danny has cancer and has also had a stroke or two which has made things a little harder for him
Mar. 29, 2011 6:20 pm
Carrie, Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge my message. I think it is wonderful that this site offers such friendship to Cindy & Danny. Kindly know that they are in my thoughts and prayers. As well as you and all of the others on this site. God Bless!

About Me
I am currently working as a Social Worker at a men's Emergency Shelter. Prior to this, we spent 15 years living overseas in support of my husband's career. We have lived in Pakistan, Tokyo Japan and Shanghai China as well as a short stay in the USA. We have 5 grown children and 5 beautiful, fun grandchildren.
My favorite things to cook
I guess I like to cook main dishes the most and play with things to try to make them better. Problem is, when I get something really great, I can never remember the next time what I had done! I go on baking kicks until we all gain so much weight, I have to stop!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I'm a bit of control freak, so I like to host rather than be hosted. Often to my detrement, as I get exhausted with pretty bad arthritis. Many of our funniest family stories might include a tale of "Mom was so tired by that point, she burst into tears"! One of those times was with our family tradition of shrimp cocktail as an appetizer to Christmas dinner ~ in error I had bought the super hot seafood sauce and my five little kids couldn't even eat it. Hubby rescued the day, by rinsing their shrimp and making some mild seafood sauce with ketchup and horseradish.
My cooking triumphs
An emergency camping meal. We got to the campsite to find a major storm starting and had to cook fast & furious to get warmed up. As we then planned on leaving early in the morning, I threw sausage, pork, beef and all kinds of veggies into a pot. My husband recently brought that up when we were discussing the show "The best thing I ever ate" Of course, I have never been able to duplicate it :)
My cooking tragedies
November 7/10 Made a leg of lamb roast for dinner. Used some different seasonings in the rub this time, so I thought that was the funny smell. My roast potatoes came out gorgeous, peas & carrots perfect and the grvy a beautiful rich color. We sit down as the minute I take a bite, I know ~ the meat is bad. Dh and Ds carried on for a few minutes until they got nervous too. I spat my first bite out, but had some of the gravy, so I could get a bit sick. But dh and ds are sitting here looking at each other, wondering who will puke first. Thank goodness I just found out where the hospital is in our new hometown! On the bright side, at least didn't have company :)
