Trees & Benches

(I know weird title, but trying to make it stand out too much if Cindy pops in)

As many of you know, there has been an interest shown in doing something for Cindy and Danny Lepp.  Soup Loving Nicole offered to coordinate this and I, in turn offered to help her with some of the legwork.  Just to update everyone as I notice there is lots of questions and people wanting reassurance that we are moving forward. Soup Loving Nicole works full-time and has had a particularly hectic week. I can only do so much from Canada but I do have free long distance and have been making some phone calls and doing internet legwork.

As far as I know so far, the only two suggestions so far are either a tree or a park bench.  Please leave any other suggestions in your comments below.

The City of Benton has no program in their parks for planting trees or dedicating park benches.  The two programs I have been able to find for tree planting only offer to buy trees for reforestation and you can request them to be planted in your State, but nothing further and you would not know exactly where your tree is, nor be able to visit it.  I have started wondering if arranging a gift certificate at her local nursery to purchase their favorite tree would be an idea.

I think there is also an interest in being very careful how any monies are collected as the last thing we want is any sense of unfairness when this is all about a very sensitive situation.  I contacted AR Elizabeth today and asked if there was any way they could help us collect the funds and pay for any order we might place.   AR has replied this afternoon that they are unable to help us with collecting any funds, but they would like to contribute to whatever we decide.  In the meantime, they have sent flowers today.  AR Elizabeth has suggested we look into PayPal or some similar service to collect funds.  I would not set up PayPal myself because currencies would cross borders twice and money would be lost in exchange rates.  I wonder if any of you know more about services like PayPal and if a collection there is possible.  And also if we two Buzzers living close together, if it could somehow be joint to reassure people a bit?  I must be the most trusting sole on the planet, but obviously people have concerns and I hope we can solve that by working together.

It is my feeling that if we all enclose a few dollars in a card, it would be overwhelming for the family and really take away from the intent of us doing something special.  I think it is appropriate however, for people to send cards to Cindy & Danny to cheer them at such a difficult time.  Their address can be found via Cindy's blog "A Different Journey" and connecting to her link there for Caring Bridge.  There are also some people who are sending their own gift privately.  Hopefully, we can start moving further forward with this over the weekend and would appreciate any ideas from all of you!

Thank you to everyone for participating ~ I hope we can get something sorted fairly quickly.

I know we all REALLY want to DO something and thank you for spear heading this. I looked at the Pay Pal thing this afternoon and I don't know about that. I also looked at wishingwell.com - I have no experience with that either. Could someone, maybe Smitty - call the family and ask if an account has been set up. That would be so easy and then the funds would be available for Cindy to use as she needs. Love you for doing this and I like you would support any and all efforts to show our support. xxxoooxxx

Thanks Carrie for the update. As you know, I trust you and Nic all the way. This is a big undertaking, and Bless you and Niccy both for your Love and concern being greater than the fears. Anything you need, anytime, just call me, or shoot me an e-mail. Prayers are still coming from Oregon for the Lepp family. Toni

Thank you for this blog. I definately do want to be part of what ever is decided to do for Cindy and Danny. They are both so close to my heart and are on a hard journey. Bless you and Nicole for getting this started....Ginny

great idea, if everyone sends some money, they might be able to plant a forest not just a tree, park bench? maybe a whole stadium. Keep us updated

Mar. 18, 2011 5:07 pm
lol RNG!! Plant the whole State, then they wouldn't have to figure whih tree was theirs!

Nana, I have never heard of Wishing Well, but I will go check that out now. I also don't know much about PayPal ~ I haven't only used it once to purchase something online from a cottage business so that was pretty straighforward.

That Wishing Well addy takes me a record store?

Mar. 18, 2011 5:24 pm
Thanks to you and Nicole for taking this on. Should we watch this blog for updates?? Again, thanks to both of you.

I should maybe clarify where my ideas were coming from with the tree and park bench. In most Canadian cities you can purchase a tree, often a flowering one for a city park or riverwalk. You can also park benches and they put a little brass plague on them saying who it is for ~ many people buy one of each side by side and we have seen families gathered in these spots for picnics on occasion, I just think that is so wonderful and just assumed the States would have the same. Maybe so somewhere, but apparently not in Benton, KY :)

I guess so at least for now Chris and thank you

Sorry - that should have read - http://www.ourwishingwell.com/

Mar. 18, 2011 5:32 pm
Carrie - there was a house we lived in that had a small park next to it - with a lovely bench and a plaque. Once a year the family would gather there and have a picnic. It was a lovely little spot.

Exactly Nana, that is what I was envisioning. Thanks for the updated web addy.

Mar. 18, 2011 5:41 pm
Does "Caring Bridge" handle donations? Let me know if I can help in anyway from NM. Thanks for posting the address - and thanks sooo much for stepping forward to get the ball rolling.

Mar. 18, 2011 5:52 pm
As far as we know any donations to Caring Bridge are to keep their website going, which is wonderful and I think some people may choose to do that instead.

Mar. 18, 2011 6:40 pm
Neither Danny nor Cindy is from the Benton area, Carrie. They've only lived there a couple of years.

I wondered that VAMom and therefore need to be careful in our choosing. Maybe something for the garden that can be moved? I have found registry with some things like that.

Mar. 18, 2011 6:48 pm
Cindy contacted me after she posted the last blog. I'm hesitant to say what her plans are without her permission. I don't want to cause any more stress to her by giving out information she hasn't already made public.

I understand completely. If and when you are able my email is carriedavies1@hotmail.com.

Mar. 18, 2011 6:57 pm
If Va Mom has contact with Cindy, then perhaps she should be the one to contact her about her wishes about where the memorial should be placed? I'm willing to contribute at any rate...Cindy is a wonderful part of AR.

Thanks ElCay, tho we maybe should wait on that question and let them deal with the here and now first. Much more appropriate to be placed where ti can be enjoyed tho.

Hi Carrie; one suggestion I can give is for either you or Nic is to talk to your local bank manager. What can be set up is a "Trust". The way this trust could be set up is that fund can be donated to the account from anywhere in the world. I have seen them set up here in Ontario to help cetain cause. It is just a thought.

Mar. 18, 2011 7:54 pm
I saw someone say today (VaMom maybe?) that she had phoned the banks. We would need SSN's and other private info. I think we need to nix that idea for privacy reasons, but thanks for the idea! Keep ideas coming, we never know what we can make work!

Mar. 18, 2011 9:03 pm
I only pop in once in awhile. So I am out of loop of what's happened to Cindy?? How can I find her blog? Thank you.

Mar. 18, 2011 9:30 pm
Click on "A DIFFERENT JOURNEY" under "Most Popular Blogs," Bridgette. If Cindy sets up a memorial fund at her bank, that might work, Carrie. She'd be in control of it but it would be separate & apart from her personal accounts.

Mar. 19, 2011 5:07 am
Brigette, Take a look at the Most Popular blogs, hers is the first one. Carrie thanks for researching this!

Mar. 19, 2011 6:28 am
Thank you Carrie!!! Yesterday was even tougher than the day before and I came home and crashed. I am just now getting caught up on the Buzz and will be back after I've had some coffee. You are great and I appreciate you very much.

Mar. 19, 2011 7:06 am
Carrie, when my fil died years ago, the family had a tree planted with a plaque on it. It's located in SoCal's Belmont Shore on the main street there. It's always nice to go by and see it! Let us know what you want to do.

There hasn't been any kind of account set up by his co-workers or anything that we could contribute too, right? Another thought might be a garden stone which most florist now have in varying sizes that can be inscribed. That is something that could be sent anywhere and anytime if, perhaps, a move is taking place.

Mar. 19, 2011 7:32 am
Hi Carrie, Thanks for taking this on=both you and Nicole. I use PayPal all the time. I noticed the other day they have a way to do fundraising/donations through them. I believe you would need someone's bank account/or a special one specifically set up for this purpose, and PayPal would be the collection point for donations. There is a whole section within PayPal for questions and suggestions for this. I saw this when I was looking to contribute to Japan relief. Have a good weekend and don't let this get you overwhelmed. You're doing a good thing & we all appreciate you.

Mar. 19, 2011 7:38 am
Carrie I just looked into Paypal and I don't think it will work. They have a fundraising option where we could actually post the button in a blog BUT Cindy would have to be the one to set it up and she would need a Premier or Business account. Once again, setting this up requires bank account and personal information. Ugh

Mar. 19, 2011 7:39 am
Ha! Yeah, what SweetBasil said :)

Mar. 19, 2011 7:48 am
You can count me in! I'd like to pitch in with the group, so, do I send you the money Carrie?

Carrie
Mar. 19, 2011 8:40 am
Jena, I came across some garden stones last night and think they are awesome! Obviously the big attraction there is it can be placed anywhere. Luv, don't send any money just yet. Hopefully we will have some method of payment set up by early next week. I have been looking at gift registries, which you can set up for just cash ~ that way we could collect the money and use it to purchase our choice (like a stone or a tree) to be delivered. I gather Cindy may have plans to relocate, but not sure if that change will still allow her yard space. Marianne, I sure wish we could find something like that tree! Knowing the little I do about the kind of people Cindy & Danny are I am sure hey would like something many people could enjoy. On the other hand, Cindy may enjoy a little prayer garden with a garden stone close to her.

here is further info on PayPal, I do have an account there and as an FYI - they charge you .50 for every transaction completed, so if you are accepting funds by someone into Paypal and then go to transfer it to the bank account necessary (or credit card), Paypal deducts their .50 service fee....so you have to keep in mind that you will be short funds for every transaction transferred as this will effect how much money you need on the other end to purchase whatever it is you will be doing (tree or bench)....and then you also have the exchange rate to factor in as well...

Mar. 19, 2011 1:56 pm
Carrie, Thank you for trying to do this. I do think that it might be a good idea to hold off on anything permanent like a tree or bench because neither Cindy nor Danny is originally from Benton and have no family there. We all would like to do something concrete to show her how much she means to us, but this may be too soon. Again, please understand I am not saying we shouldn't do anything, but we need to consider what will make her feel better and not make matters harder for her. With regard to Pay Pal, I have an account and as long as you are not a commercial enterprise the transactions are free, but the account needs to be linked to a bank account.

Mar. 19, 2011 2:01 pm
Sorry, haven't time to scan all the replies here, but thought I would mention two ideas. Contact a local tree service or nursery, they might be able to help or at least offer further contact information ? And, contact the local school district, I do not know if Dan and Cindy are still connected in any way, but often someone there can tell you what other community members are doing for memorials similar to the bench/tree ideas.

Count me in! Whenever you get something set up for donations, please let me know. cribber at embarqmail dot com. I'm happy to send a check or money order if that would be easier. Just PLEASE let me know how I can contribute.

Mar. 19, 2011 2:27 pm
Just a thought- Would AR be willing to set up a lifetime membership for Cindy that could be contributed to by members?

Hi Carrie- everyone has such good ideas. Just another suggestion (as if you haven't had enough!) if you are willing to post your address those who feel comfortable could send you money/check those who don't feel comfortable could choose something else. I am in California and willing to post my address. I think you said you were in Canada. Also if there is someone (logistically) closer who might be willing to post their address. Maybe that would be better. Just one less thing to do with the exchange rate. I will email you my address in case you want to take this further. Otherwise will just wait for further posts. Thank you

Mar. 19, 2011 2:49 pm
I did notice that there are some state parks close, maybe one of them would like a tree or bench. It just seems odd that a town would pass up a chance to add a free bench/tree. I know our town wouldn't.

I just had a thought. Do they need financial help with the medical expenses? I have a feeling there is gonna be a LOT of donations and those could be used to make life easier for them now. And after.

Another "just a thought" suggestion....what about naming a star after him? Like I said, just a thought!

Mar. 19, 2011 4:49 pm
just a thought but Ive noticed here alot of people putting a memorial on their back windshiled of their car IM LOVING MEMORY OF______ THEN BIRTH DATE AND ___ THEY ARE USUALLY PERSONALIZED BY SOMTHING THE PERSON WAS KNOWN FOR.

I like that idea Hazelnut.

Mar. 19, 2011 5:29 pm
Carrie and Nick, how kind hearted you two are to think of doing this for Cindy and Dan. There are lots of great suggestions here and I am happy to help in any way I can.

Mar. 19, 2011 7:38 pm
I don't have a lot of expendable income, but would love to help with anything that is decided upon. I know this might be overwhelming for Carrie to tend to on her own, but my heart truly aches for Cindy and Danny, and anything I can do, I would be honored to do.

Mar. 20, 2011 6:24 am
Such caring and thoughtful ideas! Been in my own gardens these last few days and wondered if there wasn't a way to do some type of living memorial gift for Cindy. Please keep us posted, I'd like to help out or donate. Nicole, knows how to find me. Cat

Mar. 20, 2011 6:52 am
Thank you for all the information about Paypal. Hazelnut, I like that idea too! Lots of great ideas ~ I also looked at the stars as an idea, that is pretty cool. Another suggestion that came to me via email would be a rosemary plant with some solar lights. Apparently rosemary is a sign of remembrance, obviously related to food also. I agree about purchasing something too soon ~ I am having a hard time wrapping my head around purchasing a memorial just yet.

Mar. 20, 2011 8:28 am
I like cheepchicks idea. Financial concerns right now is an added stress. With this broad of a donating base, it could help with medical and living expense at this time. A stepping stone can be made and personalized and it would be movable if Cindy changes locations.

Mar. 20, 2011 2:46 pm
Hi, I think that since we are an online community and know each other that way, through AR it would be good to maybe go for an idea like hazelnut's. It would also help with issues like money collection I think.. But whatever is decided on, count me in.. Cindy has been so nice to me when I was new on here.. I am sooo sad for her..

Mar. 20, 2011 5:32 pm
thx for posting the address, but i am a glass half-full type guy. anything i can do ...706-587-9340. i hardly ever read my e-mail. i want to help.

Mar. 20, 2011 10:55 pm
Thank you for organizing this, Carrie and Nicole. A monetary gift seems nice, in my opinion, because it could be used as Cindy sees fit, whether for a remembrance or medical bills, etc. Whatever is ultimately decided, I would like to contribute as well.

Mar. 21, 2011 1:23 pm
I think the idea is wonderful! I would love to participate as well. Thanks to you and Nicole for heading this up. I agree w/Citrus Punch and BellesAZ. I think a financial contribution may be best and she can use it for anything that she should need or medical bills. Also I don't think her address should be posted. I know it is all with good intentions, but it is just a privacey issue. God bless!

Mar. 21, 2011 2:37 pm
Oh, had no idea she had it displayed. Well, if that's the case, then I guess its okay. Either way, keep us posted on how we can all contribute. Thanks again for putting this together.

Thanks Lovecakes, we will let you know!

Mar. 21, 2011 4:14 pm
Carrie, I think this is a wonderful idea. I would love to participate and donate when we all come to a decision whatever is best. Please keep us posted, and thank you for taking your time to do so :)

Mar. 21, 2011 4:26 pm
Carrie, I just got your voicemail. Stupid phone! I got the little icon but never the prompt for missed call. Time to upgrade again it seems. I'm still here with any help that you need. I've still be racking my brain for the perfect solution too.

Mar. 21, 2011 4:37 pm
I've still BEEN...grrr. Another really tough day at the office. I am so thankful to you for doing all of this research. It's been all you Carrie and I appreciate you very much!

Thank you Toni:)

Mar. 22, 2011 4:52 am
This is a little bit of a round about way to get benches or trees given in their honor, but has anyone in their local area approached any of the Boy Scout Troops and presented this project as a possible Eagle Scout project? You might want to consider it.

We haven't at this point Bjorose. I gather Cindy and Danny are not from the area they are now living in, so not sure where home will be:)

The one thing that is very important to every cancer patient and survivor is exercise. Cancer loves a sedate body. The hospital that has been taking care of Danny, may have a workout area but it may be too small for them. My suggestion is to have the collection to add to their facility and send it in the name of Danny Lepp and family. (From a guy that has to work off his behind!) I can do the initial contact if you can OK it. email: oita2wife@peoplepc.com

Mar. 22, 2011 5:12 pm
That email is: pita2wife@peoplepc.com Someday I'll learn to proofread before I post! Probably still recovering from the party.

Mike, I will be be sure this idea to put this idea out there when we get things figured out ~ might be a good idea!

Mar. 23, 2011 5:45 am
Someone suggested a trip to Las Vegas for the meet up. Not sure if that would be too soon for her but thought it was a great idea. We could easily send her the money. We could send her some small token from the AR group. Just a thought! ♥

http://allrecipes.com/Cook/10228009/BlogEntry.aspx?postid=227523&sub=1 This is Cindy's blog. It is not under favorites anymore!

Mar. 23, 2011 3:41 pm
Another idea (not that your are lacking in them, or that those suggested are not wonderful) which would be relatively easy for people to contribute to, is either the hospice program or the hospital Danny was in before he came home. Both would already have fundraising accounts and I'm sure need money. A hospital locoally that my husband worked at had a memorial garden that people could contribute to.

Mar. 25, 2011 7:39 am
More good ideas! I guess in the new proposal on my latest blog I am suggesting all extra money go to Cindy directly and if she would like to donate to the ward where Danny was, she could do that in his name.

Mar. 25, 2011 2:28 pm
I really hope Cindy feels like she can keep the money if she needs it!

About Me
I am currently working as a Social Worker at a men's Emergency Shelter. Prior to this, we spent 15 years living overseas in support of my husband's career. We have lived in Pakistan, Tokyo Japan and Shanghai China as well as a short stay in the USA. We have 5 grown children and 5 beautiful, fun grandchildren.
My favorite things to cook
I guess I like to cook main dishes the most and play with things to try to make them better. Problem is, when I get something really great, I can never remember the next time what I had done! I go on baking kicks until we all gain so much weight, I have to stop!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I'm a bit of control freak, so I like to host rather than be hosted. Often to my detrement, as I get exhausted with pretty bad arthritis. Many of our funniest family stories might include a tale of "Mom was so tired by that point, she burst into tears"! One of those times was with our family tradition of shrimp cocktail as an appetizer to Christmas dinner ~ in error I had bought the super hot seafood sauce and my five little kids couldn't even eat it. Hubby rescued the day, by rinsing their shrimp and making some mild seafood sauce with ketchup and horseradish.
My cooking triumphs
An emergency camping meal. We got to the campsite to find a major storm starting and had to cook fast & furious to get warmed up. As we then planned on leaving early in the morning, I threw sausage, pork, beef and all kinds of veggies into a pot. My husband recently brought that up when we were discussing the show "The best thing I ever ate" Of course, I have never been able to duplicate it :)
My cooking tragedies
November 7/10 Made a leg of lamb roast for dinner. Used some different seasonings in the rub this time, so I thought that was the funny smell. My roast potatoes came out gorgeous, peas & carrots perfect and the grvy a beautiful rich color. We sit down as the minute I take a bite, I know ~ the meat is bad. Dh and Ds carried on for a few minutes until they got nervous too. I spat my first bite out, but had some of the gravy, so I could get a bit sick. But dh and ds are sitting here looking at each other, wondering who will puke first. Thank goodness I just found out where the hospital is in our new hometown! On the bright side, at least didn't have company :)
