I add 1 or 2 finely chopped Jalepenos and a few splashes of worchestshire sauce when browning the meat. I also use 1 pound of ground check and a pound of mild sausage. Always add a fresh tomato or two for good measure and some extra cumin. Then a few cayenne peppers for good measure. And of course I use a few extra cloves of garlic.
That being said you can follow the recipe verbatim and come out with good chili.
