Grandma Skeet's Prune Kolaches

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2005
This is a tasty recipe, and the whole family liked it. If I made it again, however, I would make a couple changes: I would make 3/4 the amount of prune filling, as they were VERY pruney. I would use a greased 13x9 pan rather than a cookie sheet to contain the large amount of streusel. I would let the dough rise 20 min before adding the filling (I missed that addition, below, when I made them). And I'd bake them longer -- I'd try 20-30 min, as they were a bit doughey with the current recommended time. I would still recommend this recipe, though. Definitely a yummy way to eat prunes!

Rouladen Rats

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2004
I made this as an entree and it was delicious. Notes: Use GROUND beef. Also, the measurements for the mustard, salt and pepper are guidelines; use more to taste. I microwaved my head of cabbage for 1½ minute to make the leaves easier to remove and work with. Next time I would use chicken or vegetable stock instead of water and make it into a gravy to serve with/over the rouladen. I served this time with package gravy and rice and everyone (husband and teenage kids) loved it!!!

Honey Oatmeal Bread I

There was way too much liquid. I added 1/2 cup bread flour, but the loaf was still small, hard and moist.

I reduced the chicken broth to 2 cups and used boneless pork instead of chicken. This is a great gumbo!

These are really good! I have made them several times, substituting different kinds of dried fruit. Delicious!

Bacon Mushroom Chicken

This was delicious! I chopped the bacon into 1" squares instead of using strips, and I made a white sauce with the drippings, flour and milk instead of using cream. It was wonderful!

Australian Deep Fried Chicken Wings

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2003
Everyone loved these! I cut the wings into pieces, discarding the tips. I was only able to marinade them for 1 hour, vaccuum packed (which is supposed to cut down the marinade time). They were the best fried chicken I've ever made.

Greek Lemon Chicken Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 26, 2002
My family didn't really like it, although I did. If you like hollendaise sauce you will like this soup. I am glad I made it, but wished I had halved the recipe.

Deviled Eggs II

This was very good. Just use the mayo and paprika as a guideline - Add enough mayo to make it the right consistancy for you, and sprinkle enough paprika to make you happy. I should have made twice as many for the party - they disappeared so fast!

Absolutely the Best Nacho Dip Ever

Reviewed: Nov. 26, 2002
This recipe is awesome. I've made it twice now. The first time I used up some non-fat cream cheese that I had and the family loved it. This last time I used regular cream cheese and it was even better. I omit the lettuce and cucumber and put sliced black olives on top. I also started the bowl by slicing out a section and putting it on a plate -- that really helped because our guests weren't being agressive enough with it and were missing the bottom layer. My family knows better now and digs right in!

Black Forest Cake II

Reviewed: Nov. 26, 2002
I made this for my husband's birthday. It was fantastic. The chocolate cake was easy to make -- I'm glad I didn't substitute a cake mix, which I thought about doing. The butter frosting was too dry, I used a total of four or five teaspoons of coffee before it was really workable. The whipped cream frosting was easy and fun. I made the cake the day before, then worried that the whipped cream frosting would get all sloppy and wet, but it all worked out fine. I kept the cake refrigerated overnight.

Meatballs in Chile Sauce

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2002
This was really delicious. The chipotles are a must, even though they are listed as optional in the recipe. My family likes spicy food, so I used medium salsa. You might want to use mild salsa, as it did turn out pretty hot. I added 4 chopped canned chipotles and they provided just enough smoky flavor. I served it with plain rice, which was turned into spanish rice by the meatballs' sauce. I'll definitely make this again.

Mixed Greens with Walnut and Roasted Onion Dressing

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2002
This is a good dressing, but there are improvements that could be made to this recipe. First, 2 "large" onions is kind of vague. I think I ended up using a lot more onion than was intended, making the dressing kind of thick. It would be better to use lbs or cups as a measurement. Second, some measurement of salt and pepper should be listed, to adjust to taste, because it is easy to overlook. The dressing was really bland the first time I served it.

Cherry Bomb

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2002
This is a delicious drink - very tasty and thirst-quenching, but the recipe needed some adjustment. When scaled to one serving only 2T rum was called for in a pint of soda. I just used the measurements listed as a guideline. What I did: a large water glass, 4 ice cubes, a shot of rum, 2T grenadine, 1/4 lime, juiced; and then filled the glass with lime soda. You could not taste the rum at all and it was very delicious.

Hungarian Pork Chops

This recipe is delicious. My 10-year-old daughter put it together with only minimal help from me. I tasted it when it was done and it was really good. Then it kept simmering while we took down the Christmas tree, and by the time we ate it, it was even better!
