Hippos are cute!
About this Cook
I collect cookbooks. Antique to new. Last count, which was last Christmas I had over three hundred and I've added more than sixty since. I love finding a recipe someone has made notations in the margin because they loved it or they improved it. It's even more fun when they're correct!
My favorite things to cook
I worked in a bakery part time for three years when my children were small (I homeschooled all of them and they've all graduated college except the youngest who is a Junior now.) I love to bake. However, anything that makes my family happy is what I enjoy cooking. My guys like spicy or comfort foods the best.
My favorite family cooking traditions
At Thanksgiving our family travels up and spends the week. In addition to turkey, ham etc. there are certain things each person expects. They all put their orders in a week ahead and I supply. We normally end up with at least 8 pies, cheesecake, spice cake, lemon bars, cookies and four other sweet snack plus the Chex mix, dips and sausage cheese balls. I love the time spent in the kitchen with my Mama, daughter and daughter in law. Very special conversation time! I wouldn't trade it for anything!
My cooking triumphs
Silly but most memorable would have to be when I finally made big fat fluffy dumplings just like my Mama makes! When I was first married that was something I just couldn't master. I refused to try any more feeling they were just plain evil. Finally after years of wishing I could make them, I just did it. To my surprise it was no big deal and they were perfect! It felt just like a beautiful Christmas morning!
My cooking tragedies
Gravy! First married my husband wanted sausage milk gravy with biscuits. Couldn't do it! I don't know how many pans of gravy I ruined. Finally while we were helping my brother in law and sister in law butcher a deer, my brother in law taught me how to make gravy! He's a man of few words and it just clicked! Of course I guess you could say those evil dumplings were a tragedy too...

Garlic Butter Sauce II
This was good but my family didn't feel like it was as good as what we get at our favorite Italian restaurant. I'll keep looking for the perfect recipe.

Soda Cracker Pie
Awesome recipe. However, even using fat free saltines, the pecans are just over 56 grams of fat so you end up with 10.9 grams of fat per serving. Just thought everyone might like to know that if you have to watch your fat grams.
