About this Cook
I love cooking comfort food and ethnic food I grew up on. there's no category for that in cooking interests. I cook healthy sometimes, but my best dishes arent cooked with that in mind. It's all about intense and sensual flavor.
My favorite things to cook
My middle name is garlic; I roast my own, and make my own roasted garlic olive oil, I make my own "gravy" (for you non-Philadelphians, that'd be tomato sauce") with several variations. My favorite dish is a middle eastern/mediterranean style chicken dish with chickpeas & kalamata olives. My daughter loves my chicken spinach & cheese saute', my brussels sprouts with bacon, and my tuna salad. I have a friend I bribe with my pot roast for odd jobs done around my house. Last time he came, he brought me another so I'd have one to make for him nexttime ;)
My favorite family cooking traditions
My maternal ukrainian grandmother taught me to cook over 40 years ago.. she rarely measured anything.. I pretty much cook that way to this day. I still have her old tin measuring spoons (she did use them once in a while) and a few of her wooden spoons that I use regularly when I cook today.
My cooking triumphs
Finally getting my rosemary chicken and potatoes to taste like my paternal italian grandmothers - the way I remember having it as a child! I've also been told by a musician from Europe that I make the best egg salad he's ever eaten anywhere in the world.
My cooking tragedies
mistakenly putting too much ricotta in my company lasagna! what a hideous mess that was. Baking isnt one of my strong suits.. I'm not very good at bread or desserts.
