Steak and Kidney Pie with Bacon and Mushrooms

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2011
Like Kathy, I added rosemary and thyme to this dish, and I think it improved it. I also added a few cloves of garlic, crushed. The flavor was great and I enjoyed the mashed potatoes in the pie - however, I found that the bottom crust did not bake and came out gummy, even after baking the pie for a full 30 mins. Next time, I think I'll try partially blind-baking the bottom crust or upping the baking temp to 400.

Mexican Bean Salad

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2010
My landlady and I both enjoyed this salad immensely! To cut down on calories, I halved the amount of oil and vinegar. I also added a jalapeno (I enjoy a little extra spice!) Will definately make again.

Cranberry Couscous Salad

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2010
I was going to post that this salad was bland and unimpressive - but as with other reviewers, when I went back and tried it a few hours later I found that it had improved considerably. This is a delicious salad, and I will probably make it again. The almonds add a very pleasant crunch to it, as well.

Cranberry-Jalapeno Relish

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2010
I enjoyed this recipe a great deal! I've been eating it in 'lettuce wraps.' Red leaf lettuce, with chicken or turkey, and a small spoonful of relish... delicious and healthy! Thanks for the recipe!

Orange Cinnamon Sticks

Reviewed: Jan. 13, 2010
I'm not thrilled with these. The orange flavor just didn't carry through, at all, and at the cooking time suggested they came out overly done. They were certainly edible, but I won't be making these again.

Fresh Asparagus Soup

Reviewed: May 1, 2008
After the rave reviews, I expected more from this. I found the flavors a bit bland.

Asparagus with Parmesan Crust

Reviewed: Mar. 20, 2007
Everyone in my family loved this recipe. I tried it both with and without the basalmic vinegar. I'm not much a fan of vinegar, so I would personally not add it in the future. I also added about a tsp of crushed garlic to the recipe, rubbing it all over the asparagus. Will make again.

Salmon With Green Fettuccine

Reviewed: Mar. 20, 2007
While we found the recipe acceptable, it wasn't anything to rave about. We didn't have any white wine, so I used sake, but otherwise followed the recipe. I found the pasta sauceto be far too thick and would add next flour if I ever made the recipe again.

Mom's Ginger Snaps

Reviewed: Mar. 20, 2007
These cookies got rave reviews from my family and my coworkers. I added 1/2 tsp of nutmeg, because I love nutmeg, but otherwise followed the recipe faithfully.

Persimmon Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2006
I found that the cookies weren't as flavorful as I'd hoped. The taste of the persimmon is hard to detect, and is overshadowed by the taste of the spices. I won't be using this recipe again, I just didn't find the cookies to be very special.

Southwestern Cactus Salad

Reviewed: Nov. 2, 2006
I thought it was a good, but not remarkable SALSA. It didn't really strike me as a salad, at all. I also had a problem with slime. I used fresh nopale that I grilled on the BBQ, not from a can.

Perfect Pumpkin Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 2, 2006
Pretty good, but not amazing. I'm a huge fan of nutmeg, so I doubled it. Mom seemed very impressed with the pie, though!

Southwestern Grilled Chicken with Lime Butter

Reviewed: Nov. 2, 2006
I thought this recipe was incredible, and my parents agreed! Absolutely perfect, I didn't make a single recipe change (well, other than we didn't have any bone-in chicken). I'll definately be making it again!

Best Ever Pie Crust

Reviewed: Oct. 31, 2006
I used this recipe for the first time when I was living in Japan. My friends, students and fellow teachers just loved it! I substitute in some butter for a portion of the shortening, though, to add some buttery flavor to the crust.

Makhani Chicken (Indian Butter Chicken)

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2006
I LOVED this recipe! The taste was incredible, very similar to my favorite curry at my favorite restaurant in Japan. I found it a little spicy for my tastes, but my dad thought it was perfect. My only real complaint is I wish it were a bit thicker. I may try adding more tomato paste next time, and less water/juice. (I used a combination of tomato paste and tomato juice to make the puree, my only substitution.)

Naan

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2006
This is very similar to naan have had in Japan, but doesn't replicate my FAVORITE naan, so I will continue searching for that ultimate naan. My older brother commented 'this would make really good pizza crust.' And you know what? ... I think he's right.

Poulet a la Grecque

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2006
I really enjoyed this recipe, and so did my family. We didn't have white wine, so I substituted sake. I also used about a 1/4 tsp of tumeric instead of saffron threads, because I simply can't afford the saffron. My mother complained that I didn't use enough salt. I told her to add her own! ;)

Orange Loaf

Reviewed: Dec. 30, 2003
This first time I made this, I think I must have accidentally used too much flour, because I felt it was too dry. I just made it again, but this time I used pineapple juice instead of orange juice, and threw in some pineapple chunks into the batter. I cannot tell you how unbelievably moist and delicious it is. I`m hard pressed not to eat the whole thing myself. I also poured the batter into two, much smaller sized bread pans and baked them for only 25 minutes at 150 degrees celsius, and they turns out perfect.

Applesauce

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2003
Didn`t add the lemon juice, and added a little cinnamon and nutmeg. Not sure how much sugar I used... I just sorta added until I was happy. My Japanese friends, teachers, and students all loved this. They`ve NEVER had applesauce before. My Canadian friend also thought it was really good.

Potato Latkes I

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2003
I made this today with 40 of my Japanese students (who`d never heard of Hanukkah before). It was chaotic, but everyone had a lot of fun! I cut the eggs as others suggested, but the students and I also found it to be much too salty...
